It starts with one. One customer, one idea, one step. You don’t need to have it all figured out, you don’t need to do what you’ve always done. Try a new way, turn one idea into something new and innovative that disrupts your industry. Just focus on your one. The one person who needs your guidance and your wisdom. Show up even when you feel like no one is listening, create things that matter and discover the unique genius that is inside you. It’s there and it’s waiting for you so you can take your one voice, one idea, one message and serve the one. The one person who is waiting to be impacted by you. It starts with one.
Sometimes it comes down to you need to give up the good to get to the great. ⠀ ⠀ It’s no joke that building a business takes hard work, determination and unwavering dedication to your vision. ⠀ ⠀ But what happens after you achieve the results you’ve wanted? What happens after you’ve achieved your financial goals that you set for the year? ⠀ ⠀ Here’s where it gets real. ⠀ ⠀ What many small business owners don’t realize is that often they reach a level of success and then hit a plateau and then they get comfortable and complacent. They’ve put in the hard work to build their business and now there isn’t anything pushing them to the next level other than themselves. The fear of having to put in more time, effort and energy into doing the next best thing puts a pit in their stomach and pushes many into a new comfort zone. It’s easier to stay there and stay safe doing what they’ve always done. ⠀ ⠀ But here’s the honest truth. What got you to this point won’t get you to the next level. When you stop pushing yourself out of your comfort zone you stop growing and you stop the journey of realizing what you’re really made of and what your highest potential really is as a leader. ⠀ ⠀ You can continue just owning your business and be comfortable and do what you’ve always done.⠀ ⠀ Or you can own your future. Do something new to go to the next level by digging in and doing the hard work to figure out what change you really want to make in this world and what transformation you seek to give people with your next big idea.⠀ ⠀ In this weeks podcast episode, Episode 12, we dig deep into how success can make you comfortable, the 3 blocks that are preventing your growth and what you can do to remove them.⠀ ⠀ Listen to the full episode with the link in bio @theresacantley or go to https://theresacantley.com/podcast to listen and read the full show transcript.
He stood in the front of the room and said "your energy is your greatest capital. You need to take care of yourself because you can't create from a place of defeat, frustration, inadequacy and fear." ⠀ ⠀ I listened intently because I was at that place of burnout and I wanted to know how to change things. The problem wasn't a lack of desire but the type of fuel I was using to push that desire forward. ⠀ ⠀ If you're there in your business feeling burned out, I'm here to tell you there is a better way. Getting burned out doesn't necessarily come from the amount you are working but more from the perspective and energy you put into the hours you are dedicating to building your business. If your desire and energy is fed by fear, lack, overwhelm and scarcity then that is what you will get more of in your results. ⠀ ⠀ But if you fuel your desire with possibility, curiosity, lessons learned and being happy with what you do and where you are every day your success will be inevitable. ⠀ ⠀ Who you are, how you show up and what you focus on is key to creating a huge shift in your business. You can have all the best strategies and tactics but if don't bring the right energy to what you're doing it won't matter.⠀ ⠀ So let's start today focusing our energy on what's possible and remember that the deeper we go to shift our energy the higher we can take our business.
Everyone has a dream, aspirations and goals but only a small percentage with pursue those dreams. In my experience it is all about shifting these 4 behaviors.
The best thing my mom ever taught me is “it doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing, what matters is that you be the best YOU.” I’ve always done things differently and looked at things differently than other people which made me think I was doing things “wrong” or “backwards”. I’ve almost given up on my ideas, my dreams and my creations including a dream of being a fashion designer after someone in design school told me “you don’t have what it takes”. But then I talk to my Mom and she would always remind me “you absolutely do if you believe you do”. 💜 Her advice is to just be you and do your own thing your own way. It’s good to be unique, it’s good to sensitive, it’s good to have a different perspective and it’s good to be an innovator. Some won’t understand and that’s ok. The world needs creativity, empathy and new perspectives because who wants the same old things anyway. So don’t give up, never give up. And when the world is negative and not accepting of who you are and what you’ve created with that amazing mind, heart and soul of yours, take the lemons they’re throwing at you and don’t make lemonade. Make something new the world has never seen before...or just make limoncello. Limoncello always makes everything look better and we’ll have some and laugh about things. 🥂 Don’t give up, never give up on your ideas, creations and dreams no matter what anyone else thinks. Take the advice from my Mom, it’s good stuff! And as a step-mom I am now passing along this great advice.
It’s been said that fear of failure is fear of growth. It can be pretty painful when things don’t go as planned. I remember when I launched my first online program and it totally bombed with not a single person interested. It was pretty painful but what I learned was one of the greatest lessons.⠀ ⠀ It taught me that we all face moments when things don't go as planned, when launches fail, team members quit and business decisions back fire. These are the moments when we dig deep and discover what we are truly made of and we CHOOSE to continue to move forward no matter what bumps in the road we encounter.⠀ ⠀ It taught me that no matter what happens the thing that matters most is that I keep showing up and keep believing that the things that are happening are all part of the process and that it will make me stronger. No matter what the thing that matters most is that I believe I am making a difference and that my success is inevitable and that even though the journey gets rough, I will BELIEVE.⠀ ⠀ I wouldn’t trade that wisdom for the world and if you're encountering a rough patch, remember you just need to believe things are happening for you, not to you to make you stronger. Failure really is all about how you frame it in your own mind. It's really a chance to try again and start again tomorrow to see what new things can happen. I’ve actually now learned to set a “fail strategy”, giving myself permission to fail on the way to achieving something big (I have 3 giant goals this year). It has helped me to learn valuable lessons, get back up, try again and keep on going! ⠀ What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned by failing at something? I’d love if you left your insight in a comment below so we can all learn together!
It's a new month filled with growth, infinite possibilities and new ideas. All sorts of newness!⠀ ⠀ Let's look for the newness and discover inspiration that can ignite new ideas. Let's work on believing that we are exactly where we are supposed to be and believe and that our ideas can indeed make a difference.⠀ ⠀ Remember, the world doesn't change on it's own. It needs newness. It needs people with ideas, inspiration and initiative. It needs people who believe in their ideas and will move them forward to create innovation, inventions and impact. People who are willing to be authentic, take imperfect action and fight for dreams that turn into ideas that will indeed create change. People who will keep going even in the face of adversity.⠀ ⠀ What can I do to help you move your ideas forward?
If you've been struggling to grow your business there are 3 things that have probably been blocking you and your team from going to the next level. Here's what they are and what you can do to fix them and start moving forward.
Something to start your day and your week! You are filled with infinite possibilities and the moment you choose to own every amazing bit of who you are and believe you have all you need to make your dreams a reality, your success is inevitable.
We are each unique in our own way. We each have a dream and a desire to make an impact and in order to do so we need to burn the boats and go all in.⠀ ⠀ It's scary and it takes courage, grit and a whole lot of faith but we know we'll get through it because we're in it together. ⠀ ⠀ We run our own race, we do our own thing and we have our own journey but we know that we're not in this alone.⠀ ⠀ I'm posting this to let you know that if you're working on building your dreams you shouldn't do it alone. It's so important to have friends that are right there with you, cheering you on and reminding you just how bad ass you really are. ⠀ ⠀ Friends who will give you honest feedback, let you know you have spinach in your teeth before you go on camera and laugh with you when things feel like they are going down hill...and remind you that they really aren't after a glass of wine. ⠀ ⠀ Here's to the people that inspire us, that push us forward, remind us just how unique we are and help us to stop comparing our apples to someone else's oranges. ⠀ ⠀ And If you feel like you're alone on this journey, I'm here to tell you that you aren't. I see you, I'm cheering you on from a far and I know you are blazing some amazing trails. ⠀ ⠀
Everyone's got their thing. Their own narrative, their own circumstances, their own fears.⠀ ⠀ What if they don't like what I create?⠀ What if I look silly?⠀ What if I'm too old?⠀ What if I sound stupid and no one listens?⠀ What if this doesn't work?⠀ What if I'm not smart enough?⠀ What if I'm not good enough?⠀ What if this project flops?⠀ What if I continue to fail like I have before?⠀ ⠀ But get this. Absolutely everyone has limitless possibilities if they choose to shift their perspective and see things a different way.⠀ ⠀ So how about this new narrative...⠀ ⠀ I am doing it⠀ I am soaring⠀ I am successful⠀ I am achieving big things⠀ I am loved⠀ I love me⠀ I believe in my ability to figure things out⠀ I am making a huge difference in this world⠀ I am looking forward and only looking back to see just how far I’ve come⠀ ⠀ What if you succeed beyond what you ever though was possible?
At some point we've all been afraid of failing at something. Maybe it's not necessarily being afraid of having something not work out but of having other people see us fail.⠀ ⠀ I get it because I had this same fear and still have it to this day but what I've learned to do is not look at things as "failures" but to look at things as "experiments". ⠀ ⠀ Let's think back to science class when you did experiments. You didn't know exactly what would happen, you didn't know if it would work out and you didn't know if you were doing it right. The whole point of it is to try it, learn from it, tweak it and try again to eventually get it to work. ⠀ ⠀ There are so many researchers, writers, inventors and entrepreneurs that try things, they don't work and they keep trying again and again. If they were afraid to fail And what people would say, where would the world be with some of the major advancements we've had. ⠀ ⠀ If we're afraid to try because we're afraid to fail we won't get to experience new experiences. But if we think about the possibilities of our experiments, if we keep trying and keep learning you never know what you might discover.⠀ ⠀ I'm willing to try and fail and try again just to have the experiment work one day and possibly be something that just might change the world.⠀ ⠀ Are you with me? ⠀ ⠀
Success is “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” There are plenty of goals I’d like to reach as a creator, an innovator and an entrepreneur before I retire, such as impacting the lives of 1 million business owners, doing a TED Talk and writing a NY Times best selling book. ⠀ ⠀ And for the longest time I set deadlines around these goals, rushing through life to meet them and feeling deflated when things weren't happening "fast enough". Deadlines can work to help keep us focused, bring clarity along the way and keep our eye on what we want to accomplish. But when deadlines don't work is when we get caught up in constantly feeling like we need to always be "achieving" faster and faster in order to have what we want. ⠀ ⠀ Along the way I let go of living my life by self imposed deadlines and instead I chose to redefine the work I want to do and what my own definition of success really is. True success for me will simply mean living fully in my purpose, having inner peace every day and being fully aware of the difference I am making and the legacy I am creating every day with the work I am doing and the people I meet. When I’ve got that, I’ll have everything I need. ⠀ ⠀ How do you define success?⠀ ⠀
Work, brunch, relax, Rose, coffee and the Masters. In between the hustle, taking time to chill. What are you doing on Sunday?
I’m on a break now: want to join me? There MUST be moments when you feel completely swamped and cannot seem to locate your creativity (that’s me right now). At times like these, I have no choice but to step away and refocus. My favorite route is to grab a cup of coffee, an inspiring and creative magazine and start to flip through. And if all else fails, I throw on my sneakers and head out for a walk in nature. How do you refocus when you need a little break?⠀ ⠀
Can I reveal something personal? When I first started my business I had a lot of obstacles that I needed to get through in order to grow, including getting out of my own way and stepping WAY out of my comfort zone. I had to learn to let go of control, to focus my energy on what was important and stop creating random things (that's the visionary in me) and to have the courage to lead. ⠀ ⠀ And now the thing I love the most and what pushes me even beyond is being able to help people to discover and remove the obstacles that are holding them back from growth and achieving the results they want. ⠀ ⠀ When you aren't growing it doesn't mean you just need to add more into your business. Many times it means doing less and removing the thing that is your greatest obstacle. Sometimes it's products that don't fit, sometimes it's burn out and sometimes it's a mismatched team member. Sometimes it's pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone to do things a new way so you can get the results you've never gotten. ⠀ ⠀ So if you're feeling stuck and you aren't seeing growth, think about this. What obstacle can you remove that will make the biggest impact and move you forward? ⠀ ⠀
How do you reward yourself for a job well done? There are so many tiny victories along the path to our audacious goals. When I had my first business, my business partner and I used to celebrate our "tiny victories" of our first customers, re-merchandising the store or being able to buy new inventory on a regular basis by walking across the street for our favorite cocktail. When I started this new venture, before I had my first profitable year in business I can remember calling my husband and saying "it's time to celebrate!" after I booked a meeting with first new client and we would head to our favorite little restaurant to celebrate. It took hard work, grit and determination, and each milestone was well worth a glass of wine, an ice cream cookie sandwich and an unexpected road trip to our favorite little spot.⠀ ⠀ We visited that spot recently to celebrate another larger victory, the launch of my new podcast, Your Next Best Step for a glass of wine and a delicious sweet and I savored every moment. It’s the small steps we take that make the greatest impact. ⠀ ⠀ So tell me, how do you celebrate your wins?
Building a business and working hard for your dreams doesn't require working longer hours and more days, doing "all of the things". It requires doing the hard work. Getting clear on what is super important and what isn't, even if what isn't is more comfortable. ⠀ ⠀ It requires getting clear on what you want and don't want and learning to let go of what is not in alignment with your goals. It requires finding the courage to use your voice and continue putting yourself out there even when you think no one is listening. Happy Monday, happy new week! ⠀ Working hard to build your dreams and build your business requires hard work and courage to let go of who you were to become who you were meant to be.
