Here I am in Gyeongbokgung (경복궁 in Hangeul; 景福宮 in Chinese). It was originally built in 1395 and served as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty. It is the largest of five grand palaces built during this dynasty. Whilst it is probably most visited palace, it is not the one to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Changdeokgong (창덕궁 in Hangeul; 昌德宮 in Chinese), a stone’s throw away, has this honour.

I had seen many grand, sweeping shots of this palace. They were all breathtaking and convinced me to visit. But when I was here, I decided that I wanted to capture the nooks and crannies that were less celebrated. My next couple of posts represent the way I saw and admired the palace. It took some patience waiting for the crowd to dissipate, but when I chanced upon solitude, I couldn’t help but feel history and time come rushing through.

The first was taken in the main courtyard, and definitely took a while since this is the busiest area of the palace. It is the tip of the platform on which Geunjeongjeon Hall (근정전 in Hangeul; H勤政殿 in Chinese) stands. This hall is Korea’s National Treasure No. 223. It is here that the Joseon king formally granted audiences to his officials, gave declarations of national importance, and greeted foreign envoys and ambassadors. You can also just see Bugaksan Mountain (북악산 in Hangeul) peeking out just above the roof. I found this interesting because having a mountain as the backdrop to an important building is Fengshui 101, and this particular ancient Korean architecture seems to have followed the rule to a T.

The second picture is probably less symbolic, but one I can’t seem to look away from: the roofing detail is exquisite. And the barren trees couldn’t have announced winter any better.
