MOPixar chose to make the main character of Soul a musician because they wanted a profession the audience could naturally connect with, something that felt pure and expressive, unlike earlier ideas like a scientist. Director Pete Docter later shared that the film itself came from a much more personal place, inspired by him turning 50 and beginning to question his own purpose and what truly matters in life. That idea shapes the core of the story, turning Soul into more than just a journey about success, but a reflection on where we place our focus and how the meaning of life often lies in simply living each moment fully.
