It’s grad school acceptance/rejection season. You went and played your audition in Jan/Feb. You’ve been waiting on the letter or email that tells you if you’re “good enough” to take the next step in your life. It felt that way to me, anyway. I put a ton pressure on myself to get into grad school so that I could go ahead and move on with the next step of my life in the “sequence of success.” For me, getting into grad school meant being accepted as a qualified musician and validation that I was on the correct career path. I though acceptance into grad school was my “GOLDEN TICKET” to success.
When I wasn’t accepted anywhere the first time, I felt like a failure. I contemplated changing career paths. Law school sounded nice. I was smart, hard working, maybe THEY’D appreciate my dedication. Why had I spent all those hours practicing, staying up late to study, gone to expensive summer festivals, taken loads of extra lesson, done everything I was supposed to do to get into grad school and then get REJECTED?
Here’s what I’ve learned since then: where you go to grad school and when and if you go to grad school does not determine your level of success after school. In fact, I think that grad school is primarily important for the people you meet and relationships you CREATE. While the name of a fancy school that everyone’s trying to get into may look good on paper, you’ll have to pay thousands of $ to go there (and pay back student loans for the rest of your life), it may not be the best fit for you, and in the end, you’ll STILL have to carve your own way. For me, not getting into grad school the first time was a blessing. I met my husband that summer. If I had gotten in somewhere, I would have never met him. For almost everything in my life where a door was shut, a window was almost immediately opened. If you’re one of the thousands of people waiting for that acceptance/rejection email, please remember that your entire life worth is not based upon if you get in or not. Also, keep an eye open for that open window. You never know what might be on the other side.
