A leading figure in the development of Arte Povera and Conceptual art, Michelangelo Pistoletto is widely recognized as one of the most influential contemporary artists of his generation.
Since the 1960s his work has followed two profoundly linked paths, a body of conceptual sculpture grounded in the tenets of Arte Povera and an ongoing series of Mirror Paintings, comprising figurative, graphic or sculptural images applied to the surface of polished stainless steel. Representing his dual interest in conceptualism and figurative representation, together these bodies of work have earned Pistoletto enduring international recognition. Alongside this practice, Pistoletto is the founder of Cittadellarte in Biella, an interdisciplinary laboratory that promotes the use of art to foster social change. Its primary mission is centered upon The Third Paradise, conceived in 2003 as the promise of a future realm in which nature and society will coexist in harmony.

Through his practice, Bali-based Italian artist Marco Cassani calls into question certain emblems and social codes, particularly those linked to political and social power, using art as a ‘catalyst’. In doing so, Cassani has been involved in two projects: the first one is Kayu, the Balinese branch of Lucie Fontaine since 2014 where the artist expands his interests of his artistic practice, in collaborating with artists, in arranging and displaying artworks, in creating concepts and in reflecting upon the concept of power embodied through the host-and-guest relation; the second one is VAPRICO, an artistic project structured as a commercial corporation of which the artist is the founder. His works of art, often based on instructions, immaterial at their very core, are ideas to be executed in the unique social environment of Bali.

One of the most influential artists of his generation and pioneer of the Relational Aesthetics movement, New York-based Thai artist, Rirkrit Tiravanija focuses his artistic practice on the interactions between people and their surroundings, creating socially-engaged conceptual works that blur the boundaries of art in novel ways and bridge the division between public and private. Tiravanija’s practice defies media-based description combining traditional object making, public and private performances, teaching and other forms of public service and social action. Tiravanija’s work often carries strains of his own nomadic existence, the blending and re-combination of different cultural contexts. Rather than insisting on a particular reality or truth, his work creates open-ended contexts for people to grapple with these questions themselves.

With her multidisciplinary practice, Israeli artist Michal Helfman operates at the intersection of visual art, dance and theater. In order to demonstrate the relations between the reviled and the hidden forces working within society and culture, Helfman has developed an installation platform based on the back-stage front-stage structure of the theatrical stage as one, which brings together simultaneously both the real and the symbolic.
Helfman exhibited in numerous international exhibitions, including the 50th Biennale di Venezia, San Francisco's Institute of Visual Art, Fondazione Sandretto in Torino and the Institute of Visual Arts in the University of Wisconsin. She is currently a faculty member at the BFA and MFA programs of Bezalel Academy.

Fendry Ekel (b. Jakarta, Indonesia) was trained at the Gerrit T. Rietveld Academy, the esteemed Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, Netherlands and Cittadellarte, Fondazione Pistoletto, Italy. As an outcome of his solo exhibition in HVCCA in New York he was invited to participate in the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), New York in 2011. Ekel has been dubbed a pictor doctus, who critically investigates the power of art, figuration and representation by appropriating images from our collective memory. His multilayered, monumental paintings, created after existing photographic pictures, explore the relation between ‘man and memory’. Fendry Ekel has exhibited his work internationally and has had reoccurring solo shows in Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan, Valencia, Mexico City, Jakarta and New York. Ekel lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and Berlin, Germany.

A leading figure of the ‘Neo-Geo’ movement in New York in the early 1980s, Barbados-born American Bali-based artist Ashley Bickerton is a known for his baroque multimedia approach to exploring contemporary society. Juxtaposing photographic prints, thick oil paint, and found objects, Bickerton depicts alien figures amidst the detritus of consumer culture, calling into question the value and significance of the art object itself. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts, graduating in 1982, and continued his education in the Whitney Museum Independent Studies Program in New York. He has exhibited extensively internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Tate, London and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

One of Indonesia’s most seminal and respected contemporary artists, Arahmaiani has long been internationally recognized for her powerful and provocative commentaries on social, political, and cultural issues. Born in 1961 in Bandung, Indonesia, she established herself in the 1980s as a pioneer in the field of performance art in Southeast Asia, although her practice also incorporates a wide variety of media. For the past six years, a particular focus of her work has been environmental issues in the Tibetan plateau region, where she has been actively collaborating on-site with Buddhist monks and villagers to foster greater environmental consciousness through an array of ongoing community projects.

One of the leading contemporary Indonesian artists, Entang Wiharso produces poignant, provocative paintings and sculptures inspired by his own personal experiences embedded with a strong examination of the predominant socio-political conditions of his home country. From universal issues of power, loss and love to broader categories of ideology, philosophy and identity, Wiharso’s work is layered with social, political and sexual critique, revealing a complex picture of the human condition. Wiharso’s recent work focuses on the duality of cultures and experiences in his two homelands, Indonesia and America, throwing into sharp focus issues of national identity, migration, race, political states and power conflicts. #entangwiharso #kayuluciefontaine #luciefontaine #firstrebirthforumubud #thegreatarchipelago #sustainabilitythroughdifferences #italianinstituteofculturejakarta #iic #italianembassy #rumahtopengdanwayangsetiadarma #bali #fondazionepistoletto #cittadellarte
Born in Italy and based in Bali, Filippo Sciascia is an artist fascinated by the way society absorbs and understands the production and consumption of images as a form of reality. He explores this fascination through painting, photography, film and video technologies. Sciascia’s concepts and subjects are neither Italian nor Indonesian; they are universal, based on deep common knowledge that has been around for thousands of years of human history. New York-based Canadian artist Rochelle Goldberg stages sculptural topographies composed of living, ephemeral, and synthetic materials, such as crude oil and chia seeds, in combination with ceramic and steel. Goldberg’s sculptures are structured by the logic of intraction—the artist’s term for an unruly set of relations in which the boundary between one entity and another is continually undermined. Goldberg's work challenges the fixity of the art object. #rochellegoldberg #kayuluciefontaine #luciefontaine #firstrebirthforumubud #thegreatarchipelago #sustainabilitythroughdifferences #italianinstituteofculturejakarta #iic #italianembassy #rumahtopengdanwayangsetiadarma #bali #fondazionepistoletto #cittadellarte

Paying tribute to the history of Tunisian-Jewish culture in the region, Djerba born, Jerusalem raised, artist Rafram Chaddad continues the legacy of traditional craft, encompassing the many facets of culture in the process. Using perishable materials and engaging with sustainability and local traditions to connect people, explore his own roots, and preserve his family heritage, Chaddad’s works exemplify the here and now, repairing the dichotomy between cultural revival and contemporary creation. Rafram is also author of a book on his incarceration in a Libyan prison, arrested while in Libya to document the remnants of the Libyan Jewish community. The New York–based Croatian artist Dora Budor creates sculptures and architectural interventions, which recall moments of cinematic experience via their atmospheric scenographies. Her artistic practice explores histories of cinema and architecture, re-contextualizing them in a second life in order to merge concepts of reality and fiction in new ecosystems. Her works often contain used movie props, special effects, and historical remnants of utopian architecture. Budor places the history of the found object into a new narrative, evoking an uncanny form of memory and emotional connection in the viewer.
