Rex knows he can go anywhere in his wheels, even on a freezing cold day. Dealing with a disabled dog is challenging for their hoomans. We know this, as we have a disabled guy too (picture #2 ). Peeing and pooping is a challenge for dogs with rear-end paralysis. Some dogs can pee on their own like Rex, but some can't without help ( they need manual bladder expression) like our Dooshie. Sometimes they can't control when and where poop comes out once the "launch sequence" has started! But rear end paralysis isn't necessarily the end for a dog. Sometimes its a new beginning, like both Rex and Dooshie. Rex had a degenerative issue. Dooshie was shot by a gun in a previous living situation. Both dogs have a zest for life that can't be ignored! That's why they are still with us! They don't wear their wheelchairs 24/7 obviously! Both Rex and Dooshie prefer to just drag their back legs at home. But don't feel sorry for them! They prefer it that way, and are very adept at moving around! Don't feel bad for them, because they don't feel bad for themselves.

I had a little extra time this afternoon, so I set up a few nose-work type enrichment activities in one of our little yards.
A few of our long time residents had a chance to get a calm walk and then use their nose to find some yummy hot dog treats in the different items.
A couple figured it out pretty quickly and a couple just wanted me to pet them and eat the hot dogs from my hands.
Often in the nonprofit sector, we are constantly trying to make something out of nothing. We make do with whatever we can get with the few resources we have.
My mom told me about a conversation she had with one of her students this week as they were sorting donations to bring to the shelter. The 12-year-old boy picked up a tennis ball and commented on how the ball was dirty and had dog hair on it. "The dogs don't care. They don't mind sharing toys." "That's not right," he replied. "These dogs have so little. When you have nothing, you should at least get one thing that's REALLY awesome." We are so incredibly grateful for our wonderful nonprofit partners and our community that help get us all the supplies we need to continue our work. But some days I wish I could worry about my job becoming obsolete. I wish I could be concerned about my skills not being needed anymore. Because that would mean we wouldn't have any more shelters and all our dogs would be responsibly owned. So yes, all of these pets do deserve something really awesome: a special home to call their own. Adopt a shelter pet.
We LOVE @nylabone !!!!! Their durability is great for us power chewers and mom feels safe letting us chew for hours! She also loves how quiet we are while chewing them and how much we love the flavor even though we aren't ingesting any calories! Nylabones keep us busy bees calm when mom needs to get work done. We love them SO much we often "fight" over them.

I had a little extra time this afternoon, so I set up a few nose-work type enrichment activities in one of our little yards. A few of our long time residents had a chance to get a calm walk and then use their nose to find some yummy hot dog treats in the different items. A couple figured it out pretty quickly and a couple just wanted me to pet them and eat the hot dogs from my hands.

Often in the nonprofit sector, we are constantly trying to make something out of nothing. We make do with whatever we can get with the few resources we have. My mom told me about a conversation she had with one of her students this week as they were sorting donations to bring to the shelter. The 12-year-old boy picked up a tennis ball and commented on how the ball was dirty and had dog hair on it. "The dogs don't care. They don't mind sharing toys." "That's not right," he replied. "These dogs have so little. When you have nothing, you should at least get one thing that's REALLY awesome." We are so incredibly grateful for our wonderful nonprofit partners and our community that help get us all the supplies we need to continue our work. But some days I wish I could worry about my job becoming obsolete. I wish I could be concerned about my skills not being needed anymore. Because that would mean we wouldn't have any more shelters and all our dogs would be responsibly owned. So yes, all of these pets do deserve something really awesome: a special home to call their own. Adopt a shelter pet.

We LOVE @nylabone !!!!! Their durability is great for us power chewers and mom feels safe letting us chew for hours! She also loves how quiet we are while chewing them and how much we love the flavor even though we aren't ingesting any calories! Nylabones keep us busy bees calm when mom needs to get work done.
