Did you know Eucalyptus oil was like .. Australia's thang? After the gold rush the workers turned to using our biggest native resource plant wise.. the Eucalyptus tree! Hardy, prolific and the best part.. organic! Purely because of all the previous mentioned attributes.
Working with what thrives naturally means you don't need to invest time energy and money into fighting off pests and disease, it's got it covered! For them and for US..
The sad part is.. we mainly import this stuff now? Once 100 percent of the words demand came from here now we can declare about 3 percent of (10 at BEST) is from us.. isn't that insane?
Why? China started growing it, same for south Africa and parts of Europe and south America.
This industry is all but forgotten about, Melbourne is scattered with the old buildings once owned by chemists and botanists that cottoned onto the medicinal and hygenic uses for Eucalyptus oil. Richly indented in Australia's history, I say cut the cattle export (as a principle) and hone back on the industry all together And get back on letting this baby go, with no upkeep you can started producing your own oil, soooo many uses!
Hey just sayin' .. sustainably thinkin it's a no brainer; our land isn't cut for cattle it takes too much resources (from the earth and us).. Anyway another battle I'm not harping on today.. But this old distillery was super interesting, to see how it was done, which was by make shift resourceful minds, this and distilleries like it are dotted throughout the area where some particularly high oil yielding species grow. All they needed was water, steam and bottles to catch it ;) ALL parts of this process were recycled back into the area it came from, circular system y'all.
This truck was a mobile still... fill the truck up.. back her up and tightly get lid on and attached the steam. Bam! No copper stills here haha horses made this process possible back in the day though untill the 50s/70s.
