Fantastic Planet, originally titled “La Planete Sauvage” is a 1973 French animated science fiction film taking place in the far future on an alien planet, in which humans are merely animals; some pets, others pests - to the race of highly advanced gargantuan humanoid aliens known as “Draags.” The humans living on this planet are put under constant torment from the environment; the “Draag” society, the hostile wilderness, and even fellow humans, all of which are primitive descendents from those caught on Earth. The story follows the perspectives of a Draag teen girl as well as a human boy she keeps as a pet, named Terr - the main protagonist that starts the film out as a newborn, but towards the end is an adult. In the film, through the two primary perspectives - we see the way the Draags live as well as how they see the humans, and vice versa for the human perspective. The film was made with the intent of highlighting the issues of racism, animal rights, and as an allegory for the dying European colonial empires. Within the context of the real world, France was losing much of its colonial possessions to violent revolutions that were paradoxically won with the tools the French gave to their colonies - weapons and technology. Similarly, the Humans win their freedom by turning the Draag technology against them.
The aesthetic style was - and still is one of the most unique pieces of animation in cinema history, in part due to the European origin of the film, which takes inspirations from the expressionism and surrealism nature of postwar European art. Roland Topor, responsible for the animation of this film used paper cutouts, drawing with cross-hatching techniques. These cutouts were rearranged each frame to produce stop motion. The film’s look is signature for Topor’s style, with the imagery on screen drawing similarities to that of the surrealist paintings of Salvador Dali, an artist from Spain. Due to the style of animation and its imagery, it has an ambient nature to it.
