Happy Birthday Norm Nielsen!
.
Today marks the 85th birthday of my best friend, husband and life partner, Norm. It is remarkable what this kid from Kenosha, Wisconsin, has accomplished in this life. He was a baker, a bicycle racer and he then discovered his life’s passion of being a magician. He went to the Chavez School of Magic and later opened his magic shop in Kenosha in 1956. He learned woodworking in the 1950s and learned to build props from Theo Bamberg (Okito).

His huge break came in the late 1960s when he appeared in the Ed Sullivan Show. From there, agents in Europe discovered him and he practically toured Europe for twenty years. Honing and perfecting what many would consider the perfect 8.5 minute magic act.

In 1990 he started to collect magic posters, and added that element to his magic business. Buying, selling and trading them became a passion, to the point where he amassed one of the largest vintage magic poster collections in the world.

What a blessing to have had such a wonderful life. Not only because of his accomplishments, but the fact that he has always remained in being the most honest and decent person I know.
.
I have now been with Norm for twenty-four years. In spite all the ups and downs, it has been a privilege to share my life with him. Unfortunately, in 2015 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Life has not been as easy since then, as his short term memory is gone, and he is now more frail. However, he still takes things in stride and still has a wonderful temperament; he is quite gregarious and enjoys the company of others.

Adversity culls the list of “friends”. What I know is that we are deeply grateful for the few of you that have helped both Norm and me, physically and/or emotionally during these difficult times. There is a place in heaven carved out for you, good folks.

I don’t know what this new year of his remarkable life will bring. All I hope and pray is for a good quality of life. May you all be able to find your passion like Norm did. The biggest thing I have learned from him: Find your passion and pursue it.
