My Christmas Bird. Thyme, rosemary, sage, lemon, garlic, shallots, and assorted root veggies. 🎄
I haven’t knit anything in years. I remember learning how to knit from @lemkeke in the Mug back in college. Anyway. We were at Michael’s the other day picking up gifts and I told Ken to pick out some yarn and I would knit him a scarf. As we debated colors, AJ pulled this yarn off the shelf and squeezed it, wouldn’t let it go. Of course it was one of the expensive ones 😂 I decided I’d turn it into a cute little baby scarf and a few days later and it’s done. This is a much better way to keep my hands and mind busy than scrolling through Facebook. I need to up my knitting skills, I pretty much only know the basics, anyone out there knit and have some favorite resources? #knitting #fashionbaby #rainbowyarn #woolscarf
Why would I eat greens any other way ever again? Chard sautéed in olive oil, garlic, “miso butter” (made from chickpea miso and vegan butter), and red pepper flakes. Served over coconut nori rice with an egg and avo. Rice and greens recipes from Run Fast, Cook Fast, Eat Slow. #eattherainbow #runfastcookfasteatslow
I went to bed with a migraine and woke up with it still there. I forced down my overnight oats and laid in bed drinking coffee and convincing myself to get dressed. It was cold enough down here that I had to break out the wool base layer tights and thickest wool socks, which also added to my dread of getting out the door. The first few miles with cold muscles and a headache were rough. But after I got used to breathing in the cold, fresh air, the everyday magic of running did its thing: my headache slowly faded, my legs warmed up, my head cleared, and I was once again grateful that my hobby gets me up and out of bed, even on a frigid, migraine morning. I am glad I didn’t post the whiny “why do I run?!” story that I considered, and instead just walked out the door. Feeling strong + grateful 9 miles and a perspective shift later. #runlikeamother #befitdavisrunner #longrun #baselayers #woolsocks #emilywaukee19
Not the most gorgeous but definitely the most delicious. Continuing on through #runfastcookfasteatslow and made Wild Rice pancakes tonight. Topped with @kitehillfoods chive and onion dairy free cream cheese and smoked salmon. We also topped with hot sauce. They were super satisfying and easy. Also I had no idea wild rice was a protein source. Much needed after a very tough tempo run this morning and an early flight tomorrow morning. Also yes that’s a slice of lemon on AJ’s plate because Ken had one in his water and AJ is obsessed with lemons. Strange child. #dairyfree #eattherainbow #runlikeamother
Maybe my 2 favorite ornaments 🎄I will never again make apologies for joy or be too cynical or cool to love this time of year out loud. That phase happened to coincide with a very lonely, unhappy time in my life where I didn’t like anything, anyone, or even myself very much. Christmas/winter time is the best. I love all the cooking and sharing meals, finding just the right gift to make someone smile and feel loved, warm drinks, fires, pajamas.🎄
Thanksgiving 2: @inagarten Perfect Roast Chicken 💕
I am thankful for: a thoughtful husband who warmed up the car before my run, a wfh job that allows me plenty of sleep even when I have to do a workout, and to wake up on a beautiful farm everyday. Timed 2 miler done. It was cold and my lungs hurt and I’ve clearly lost some fitness but I’m ready to get back to it. #emilywaukee19 #runlikeamother
My blue eyed everythings. Even one night away makes me miss them so very much. 😍
Most fall dinner ever. @ohsheglows vegan broccoli “cheese” soup (yes you get to stir cheesy sauce in at the end) and @minimalistbaker Pumpkin Sage Biscuits (with vegan butter and maple syrup on top). Even AJ gets to try some soup. #dairyfree #soyfree #babyledweaning #scratchbaking #falldinner
Our outdoor party turned into an indoor party because of the wind. Our power went out shortly after guests started arriving (and didn’t come back on until early this morning - we spent the night at a hotel). No hay ride, lots of people in our small house, not much to do but drink and watch the kids play. But it didn’t matter - we had SO much fun celebrating this little guy with everyone - including 4 generations - and realizing that AJ is so loved by so many was the best part of the weekend. I know we have many more years ahead of us, but something about making it through year 1 gives me a little room to breathe. Love you all and thank you again for the ways you’ve helped us through this first year!
1. It’s been an amazing year. Thank you to those who came to celebrate with us today, and to everyone who’s helped us navigate this crazy adventure with our little dude.
It is SO hard to leave for a run when this little butternut squash is so cuddly and cute but I wanted to see how my legs were feeling. The answer - not great. More recovery needed, everything just felt heavy. I was considering a half in a couple of weeks but I’m leaning away from that idea now. Local 5Ks and 10Ks for the rest of the fall it is, starting tomorrow with an easy stroller 5K. How’s everyone else’s recovery going? I wish I lived near somewhere with compression boots and ice baths. Going to have to maybe invest in a pair and start DIY’ing it in my tub. Being a rural runner has its challenges, but it’s also nice having an entire town to myself in the morning. Oh PS, I decided to jump on the #strava bandwagon a few years too late... #runlikeamother #marathonrecovery #deadlegs

Dinner/balance. Black bean veggie burgers + salad + fries.
22! My longest and last really long run of training this time around. I didn’t cry at the end as I usually do, I just smiled. It was a solid run start to finish - 6 easy/10 @ marathon pace/6 easy. I crossed 100 miles for the month. I felt good about prep (oatmeal, water, a little coffee, pumping every ounce of milk out while AJ slept, a solid 💩, you runners get why that’s the most critical piece). I felt great about the pacing, my legs, my lungs, my head, and my heart during the run. All measures, both quantifiable and qualitative, say I am ready to PR in a couple of weeks. I feel relaxed, prepared, and ready. Looking forward to less mileage! I’ve never had a better 20+ miler in 4 years of marathoning. Hope you’re all enjoying the last few weeks before the big dance, and I can’t wait to see my @3run2 friends on the course and cheering. 😘😘 #emchi18 #runlikeamother #marathontraining #chicagomarathon #worldmajor #26point2 #runningmama
Good lord, I love this man. Happiest birthday to you, Ken. No matter how amazing the gifts are that I give you for the rest of our lives, they’ll never be as good as the gift you give me every day by loving me and raising our sweet, sweet AJ. “I need you wildly as a blue jay needs a tune it can sing into the afternoon.”
