When I saw my mate, Alan Carroll, post this photo last week I was hit by how much it effected me. This is a photo of Grand Illusion Decorative Painting’s studio (empty) on 20th St in Manhattan. This is like the CBGBs of decorative painting. Instead of Blondie, Patti Smith, The Ramones, or the bands that filled the iconic music venue on Bowery, this studio hosted the likes of incredible painters I was fortunate enough to work with like Alan Carroll, my brother Ryan Pollastro, Jake Benton, Jason Ebers, Sonya Meddeb, Marge Cuff, Foffe, Jon Smith, and many other talented friends from all over the world. Pierre Finkelstein somehow fit an entire 4-story building of stuff into a 600ft2 space! Damn, The Art of Faux was written here. There was a day in April 2000 when I started my 2-week turned 8-year apprenticeship with GIDP while attending Hunter College. There was a day in September 2001 when Pierre and I stood on the roof of this building and watched the WTC burn from a hole where an airplane flew into the side of it. There was the day in 2008 when I closed the door and began my journey on my own. Too many memories to recount here. This will forever be like a childhood memory of an old home to me. Thanks for all the memories. My goodness...once these floors are finished and the walls painted over, a few white shirts will never know its history and its importance to many. . . #nyciconic #decorativepaintinghistory #theartoffaux #gidp #decorativepainting #interiordesign #nycinteriors #pierrefinkelstein #nychistory

Well said Jeff. Took me a minute to recognize the space with all that history( and, well, everything) gone

@jeff_pollastro Thanks for sharing! As craftspeople, now more than ever, we must show in the work we do the passion we have have for our craft, but more importantly, we must continue sharing these stories of how we got here so that the history and importance is never forgotten. 👊

  • @omarswoodworks great comment! I agree. NYC has seen its fair share of facelifts and the workshops that once built an entire industry - BK to LIC especially. The book of stories that could be generated...

Love your story Jeff...lots of memories of how your life began in NYC...shaping your future success❣️

❤️❤️❤️

  • @emceesonaar and where my instagram handle/longrunning nickname originated. 20 West 20th will always have a very special place in my heart.

  • @emceesonaar foreva! Miss you, Sonaar!

Well said Jeff... the energy generated in that space continues to flow through our brushes and trowels. Some of the fondest memories of my working career were made in that space. Bring on the Brooklyn chapter 🔥🌟

  • @jeff_pollastro STEEEEEEEEEVe

  • @jaco_benton haha! “Hey, yo, Steve, it’s Pierre...I mean, is Pierre there, it’s Steve!”

  • @jeff_pollastro there is so much more to be said... perhaps one day over a pint or two. And the legendary dub selections! Epic and as broad as they were deep 😎🚀

Thank you Jeff for this send off ! I did not hit me till I read your post We certainly had our share of fun , laugh, passion, yelling.frustration, but mostly a high energy restless studio where a lot of talent and talented people crossed path. 26 yers is long time to accumulate memories
