“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” • Pablo Picasso
Marble & Bronze Theirs was the history written in it.
Ultima Thule - “a place that lies beyond the edges of the known world”, the unknown. I became acquainted with this phrase through NASA’s history making endeavor at the beginning of this year. I love this term in so many ways, since medieval times, this simple Latin phrase was the designation of the mapless, the unwritten parts of the world. These are the unknown shores that captivate us, that keep us looking farther than we have ever looked before. The safety of home is a beautiful thing, but it is made all the more beautiful when dreamed of from the edge of the unknown. We have explorer souls.

On the 24th of April 1916, Ernest Shackleton and five others climbed into a lifeboat clinging to the faintest of hopes. After the loss of their expedition ship, the Endurance, to crushing sea ice, they and the rest of their crew had been stranded on a small uninhabited island off of the coast of Antarctica. Shackleton had hatched a plan, it was their only chance for salvation, but this plan was so impossible it verged on the suicidal. One of the remaining lifeboats was chosen to sail north into the storm ridden South Sea. As the five crew members set off, with only rudimentary navigation tools, they had only one chance. That chance, as they saw it, was South Georgia Island and it’s small fishing settlement. The problem was that they were aiming at an incredibly tiny island in an immense sea, and if they missed it, the currents would take them into certain oblivion. This was the only hope, the only chance to live, so they set off. On May 8th, against all odds, the island came into view. With this island came rescue, not just for the five, but for the whole crew still stranded off the Antarctic coast. With this island came Shackleton’s salvation.
“We are not living in a world where all roads are radii of a circle and where all, if followed long enough, will therefore draw gradually nearer and finally meet at the centre: rather in a world where every road, after a few miles, forks into two, and each of those into two again, and at each fork, you must make a decision.” • C. S. Lewis
So... I decided to take a short break from post quotations and being pseudo-intellectual (😜) and let my current binge-watching of Westworld invade your Friday, who else out there is a fan??🙋🏻♂️ (P.S. that opening title sequence gets me every time!)
“Voyaging begins when one burns one's boats, adventures begin with a shipwreck.” • Michel Serres
A little while back, I was asked to create a jacket patch for a project, a patch that would exemplify unity; my mind immediately went to the allied bomber crews of WWII. This was a job with long odds of success, the journey was arduous and perilous, but those crews believed that if they trusted each other, had each other’s backs, and worked together, they might yet see the battle won. There is a brazen excitement in being a lone wolf, in doing it your way, in going it alone, but I’ve learned one thing... As much excitement as there is in striking off on your own, there is power in journeying together. Just like those crews, we are better together, we will go farther, faster, into this amazing future, together.
“When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.” • John Muir
“A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for.” • John A. Shedd
Slipping through silent Caribbean seas, the hum of the engine is the only sound on the wind. On the horizon, the faint glow of lights emulate from some distant island.
Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright
Christmas fonts! We love this time of year, it feels like everything is a little bit brighter and peace descends for a while. We have been zipping around the Caribbean this week, and the Christmas spirit is just another layer of warmth on the already amazing hospitality we have been shown by all of our hosts! Also there’s no WiFi haha, so that explains the lack of insta updates! Hope everyone is having a great lead up to Christmas!
Always keep refining your craft! I loved these vintage tools and amazing workshop that we did promotional shots for this year, it was a great reminder that no matter the skill, to get your imagination out, you have to keep working at your tools!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Remember this little fella from last December? This is one of my wife’s favorite designs since we started. I mean, I can’t blame her, I connect with this sketch too, this adequately represents what I look like on a Netflix binge. Anywho.. Who’s excited for Christmas?? 🙋♂️
