Satilla Riverkeeper is at the annual @waterkeeperalliance conference, learning and sharing with waterkeeper working across the world. #NiagaraFalls flows about 100,000 cubic feet per second. (Even with all the recent rain, the Satilla was only flowing about 3,000 cfs) #wkac18

This week’s feature #SatillaNative is known as the #BananaSpider , the Golden Silk Orb, or Writing Spider. These big arachnids may be intimidating in shear size but don’t worry, they are nonvenomous. Their beauty doesn’t just stop at their unique coloration. They also are part of the orb weaver family of spiders, meaning they build incredibly strong, intricate, and fascinating webs to catch their prey. These spiders are a great example of sexual dimorphism, meaning the males and females look very different. Females can be up to three times as large as males. They tend to build their webs low which unfortunately causes a lot of human contact. Please keep an eye out for these beauties on the #SatillaRiver this spring and let them do their job which includes getting rid of those pesky mosquitoes!
EPA estimates that 75% of the American waste stream is recyclable, but we only recycle about 30% of it. Do your part to combat the trash! #WaterkeeperCleanup #EarthDay #ReduceReuseRECYCLE Where can we recycle in the Satilla watershed? Share your answers in the comments below.
This week’s feature #spring #SatillaNative is the underappreciated #SawPalmetto . These close relatives of the palm tree are true survivors. These plants due well in most conditions in the southeast and are able to withstand fires that are required for a successful pine forest ecosystem. Their roots can reach up to 20 feet into the earth! They provide habitat for a multitude of other animals as well. Take a second to appreciate this admirable endurer, growing along many of the bluffs on the #SatillaRiver .
Once in the water, plastic never fully biodegrades, but breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, eventually being dubbed "microplastic" — debris less than 5mm long. Satilla Riverkeeper is teaming up with Sea Grant/MAREX to sample microplastics in the coastal reaches of our watershed.
