đ2009
A master of the contemporary realist oil painting movement, Zhao Kailin studied the form at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1991. Drawing from the Western tradition of portraiture and composition as well as Chinese culture, he narrates the direct gaze of his seated subjects, usually female, with a quiet aesthetic that speaks of inner beauty.
Zhao has shown works in solo exhibitions including âZhao Kailinâs Realism Oil Paintings, Contemporary Chinese Fine Art Gallery, Laguna Beach, CA (2006); and âZhao Kailinâs Realism Oil Painting Across Northern Europe Region,â Kurt Svenssons Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden (1994). . đRembrandt Peale đ1778 - 1860 In this glowing image of two of his nine children, Rembrandt Peale paid equal tribute to their sisterly love and to their own embrace of artistic pursuits. Pressed against each other, with arms delicately linked, Rosalba Peale and Eleanor Peale Jacobs sit before a tapestry-covered table on which a palette and volume of music rest. The talented Rosalba, a constant aid in her fatherâs work, holds a drawing tool in her hand. . đHarold Muñoz, 'Des l'Aube' đ2017 Harold Muñoz is a painter who lives and works in Paris, France. Harold explains his work by saying, âI try to compose images of strange beauty, alchemy of sweetness and melancholy exalted thoughts. The women leave quietly, languid, so pale and so beautiful that their flesh becomes transparent blue. I would like to express this very personal vision of beauty because it makes me think of the fragility of life.â . . . #art #arthistory #museum #onlinemuseum #gallery #onlinegallery #inspiration #artoftheday #paintingoftheday #history #painting #paint #artist #artwork #illustrator #drawing #draw #artoftheday #artsy #amazingart #dailyart #creative #onlineartgallery #finearts #arte #followback #follow4follow #like4like #instagood #tbt
. đ R.A. Leslie, 'Queen Victoria in Her Coronation Robes' đ1838 Some months after her coronation in June 1837, Queen Victoria posed for this portrait. It shows the Queen dressed in her coronation robes and kneeling at the altar in Westminster Abbey. Even this small sketch reveals Leslie's skill as an artist who was able to combine the intimate and the historic in a single scene. This point was reinforced by the fact that the Queen later commissioned him to record the christening of her first child, the Princess Royal. This painting depicts one of the most moving and private moments on the intricate five hour long medieval state ceremony. Immediately after the supreme moment of the Homage when she was presented to the people, she took off her Royal Crown and kneeling in her elaborate dalmatic robe, stiff with golden eagles, testified by receiving the sacrament to her personal Christian faith. . đHenri Adrien Tanoux, 'SalammbĂŽ' đ1921 SalammbĂŽÂ (1862) is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert. It is set in Carthage during the 3rd century BC, immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt which took place shortly after the First Punic War. Flaubert's main source was Book I of Polybius's Histories. The novel kickstarted a renewed interest in the history of the pre-Imperial Rome's conflict with the North African Phoenician colony of Carthage. After the First Punic War, Carthage is unable to fulfill promises made to its army of mercenaries, and finds itself under attack. The fictional title character, a priestess and the daughter of Hamilcar Barca, the foremost Carthaginian general, is the object of the obsessive lust of Matho, a leader of the mercenaries. With the help of the scheming freed slave, Spendius, Matho steals the sacred veil of Carthage, the ZaĂŻmph, prompting SalammbĂŽ to enter the mercenaries' camp in an attempt to steal it back. The ZaĂŻmph is an ornate bejewelled veil draped about the statue of the goddess Tanit in the sanctum sanctorum of her temple: the veil is the city's guardian and touching it will bring death to the perpetrator. . đJean Auguste Dominique Ingres, 'La Grande Odalisque' đ1814 Discreetly seductive This woman lying on a divan is offering herself because she is nude and turns her face towards us. The painting's title, which means "harem woman," and the accessories around her conjure up the sensuous Orient. But the woman is also discreet because she shows only her back and part of one breast. The nude was a major theme in Western art, but since the Renaissance figures portrayed in that way had been drawn from mythology; here Ingres transposed the theme to a distant land. The subject of the odalisque fascinated Boucher in the eighteenth century and was later chosen as a theme by ThĂ©odore ChassĂ©riau (1819-1856), one of Ingres's pupils. Throughout his career, many of Ingres's works feature Orientalist themes, such as The Turkish Bath (Louvre), which he painted towards the end of his life. The female nude, historical scenes, and the portrait were Ingres's favorite genres. A nude for a queen Caroline Murat (1782-1839), Napoleon's sister and the queen of Naples, commissioned this painting in 1813. It was probably a matching piece to another nude, La Dormeuse de Naples, destroyed in 1815. La Grande Odalisque was painted in Rome, where Ingres had arrived in 1806 to complete a fellowship at the AcadĂ©mie de France. The artist remained in Italy until 1824 because his art was unpopular in Paris. The works he exhibited at the Salon of 1806 (Caroline RiviĂšre and Madame RiviĂšre, Louvre), and the paintings he sent from Rome (The Valpinçon Bather, and Oedipus and the Sphinx, Louvre) were criticized. The exhibition of La Grande Odalisque at the Salon of 1819 confirmed that the critics didn't understand Ingres's style. They admonished him for disregarding anatomical reality, which set him apart from his teacher, Jacques Louis David (1748-1825). đž Comment the city you are from! đž . đGeorge Washington Thomas Lambert, 'Hera' đ1924 Hera Roberts (1892â1950s?) was a painter, illustrator and designer, and a Sydney socialite. She is best known for her covers for The Home magazine, a monthly publication for the independent, modern Australian woman, which aimed to emulate the international magazines Harperâs Bazaar and Vogue. Her artwork incorporated vivid colors, geometric shapes, sharp angles and streamlined forms. In Hera, Lambert created a modernist portrait of a noted Sydney socialite. He used an angular, abstract composition, clear strong lines and hard edges. Through his use of bold color contrasts (the bright flame color of the frock and the shimmering blue of the shawl) and simplified forms on a flat plane, he created an image of a new woman. He presented her with the symmetrical face, elongated neck and cosmetic-ized finish of the modern woman. She has a tranquil expression on her face, but her animated eyes and gentle smile suggest her personality. The flower study painted with dashing brushwork creates a counterpoint to the figure. To some extent Lambert created a portrait which mirrors the highly stylized cover designs with bold color combinations for The Home magazine, both by Thea Proctor using Hera as a model and, after 1927, by Hera herself. As Lambert depicted Hera, these images frequently show women in angular and yet poised positions, with intelligent, chic faces and short cropped hair, almond shaped eyes and rosebud lips. . đž Comment 'This painting is...' then let your keyboard predict the rest of the sentence! đž . đ Frederic Leighton, 'Flaming June' đ 1895 Eyes wide shut Unconscious women, be they sleeping, entranced or dead, are a bit of a fixture in Victorian painting. Frederic, Lord Leightonâs Flaming June is one of the most famous; the other is Millaisâs drowning Ophelia. Dream lover Leightonâs sleeping beauty, though, seems untroubled. The painting is a peachy confection. It blooms with tantalising, luxurious life. Sheâs both physically present yet psychically remote, lost in a dream. Teacherâs pet Some have suggested that the model is Leightonâs muse, the actor Dorothy Dene. He paid for her elocution lessons and their relationship apparently inspired George Bernard Shawâs Pygmalion. Rags to riches The painting is so ubiquitous today, itâs hard to believe it was lost for 30 years following its removal from the Ashmolean. Andrew Lloyd Webber spotted it for ÂŁ50 in an antiques shop in the 1960s but his granny refused to lend him the dosh. Today, Puerto Ricoâs Museo de Arte de Ponce is its regular home, where itâs known as the Mona Lisa of the southern hemisphere. . đ Alex Venezia đ1993 - Alex Venezia b.1993 Virginia Beach, Virginia; currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Working at East Oaks Studio. Primarily a self taught painter, Alex Venezia, first became aware of the transcendent power of art during a high-school art lesson on chiaroscuro while examining the works of Caravaggio. This class marked a unique turning point for the young student as he began to consider a vocation in the arts. Searching for new art experiences he frequented the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia where he was able to fill his eyes with the works of the Masters and make copies. Venezia has sought out and studied classical technique with many of todays top representational painters including: Colleen Barry, Daniel Sprick, Michael Klein, and Jeff Hein. "In his words, Inspiration comes in many forms, and usually far from the easel, but thereâs nothing like seeing the work of an artist that you hold in high regard in person. It has a way of putting me in my place and motivating me to become a better painter." And so it has. Most recently Venezia took home the 2017 first place prize in the Still Life Competition at the prestigious Grand Central Atelier in New York. . đArtemisia Gentileschi, 'Self-portrait as the Allegory of Painting (La Pittura)' đ c. 1638-1639 Artemisia Gentileschi was invited to London in 1638 by Charles I, and probably produced this sophisticated and accomplished self-portrait in England. She holds a brush in one hand and a palette in the other, cleverly identifying herself as the female personification of painting - something her male contemporaries could never do. It was probably during her brief English sojourn (1638-c.1641) that Artemisia Gentileschi produced this painting. She was invited in 1638 by Charles I to come to London to join her father, Orazio Gentilieschi, who had been working in England since 1626. On one level the work depicts an allegorical figure of Painting, and was described as such in Charles I's inventory. (...) This work is also, however, a self-portrait: as a woman artist, Artemisia identifies herself as the female personification of Painting. There are precedents for this conflation of identities in representations of female artists. As a self-portrait the painting is particularly sophisticated and accomplished. The position in which Artemisia has portrayed herself would have been extremely difficult for the artist to capture, yet the work is economically painted, with very few pentiments. In order to view her own image she may have arranged two mirrors on either side of herself, facing each other. Depicting herself in the act of painting in this challenging pose, the angle and position of her head would have been the hardest to accurately render, requiring skilful visualisation. With this fascinating work Artemisia Gentileschi contributed to seventeenth-century visual arguments concerning the elevated status of the artist. . đ Edouard Manet, 'The Suprised Nymph' đ1861 The Surprised Nymph was Manetâs way of dipping his toes into the murky waters of painting decidedly scandalous, birthday suit-clad females en plein air. It was, shall we say, a preliminary sketch for his nudes to come, leading up to the controversial cult classics, Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia. But long before Manet was "lunching" on grassy knolls and lounging around with alleged prostitutes in bedchambers, he was dealing with some pretty dicey stuff in his personal life, much of which involved this voluptuous and stunning Nymph who we see momentarily distracted from her bathing activitiesâSuzanne Leenhoff. Manet had 99 problems in his life and they all involved women. None of his relationships, however, were more strange than the one he had with Suzanne Leenhoff. Described by art historian Anne Higonnet as "plump, blonde and Dutch," she began her association with the Manet clan as a piano teacher to Ădoaurd and his brother Auguste. It wasnât long before she became pregnant with a son, LĂ©on-Edouard KoĂ«lla Leenhoff, who would remain very close with the Manets throughout his life. Which âManetâ was LĂ©on's father, however, is up for debate to this day as Suzanne, shall we say, got freaky in the sheets with Manet, his father, and possibly also his brother(s)? (...) The fact that The Surprised Nymph, the painting that Suzanne stars in, was painted it 1861, leads us to believe that the two were romantically involved even before their official marriage but kept their affair secret for years. Why? Some speculate that since Suzanne was also involved with Manet's father, they would have needed to keep any canoodling on the down low, for fear of offending Manet the Elderâyikes. . đGeorge de Forest Brush, 'A Celtic Huntress' đ1890 Painter. Shortly after the artist was born, his family left Tennessee and settled in Connecticut. At age sixteen, Brush was commuting to New York City to study at the National Academy of Design, and three years later he won a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaus-Arts in Paris, where he worked under Jean-LĂ©on GĂ©rĂŽme. Brush's trips West began in 1881, with visits to the Shoshone, Arapaho, and Crow Indian tribes in Wyoming. He became a respected and influential friend of the Crow in the years that followed and produced reasonably accurate views of Indian life for Harper's and Century magazines. After he returned to the East in late 1885, however, his Indian subjects became more ideal and poetic, as if he were trying to recapture the ancient spirit of the race. By the turn of the century, Brush was better known for his portraits of women and children conceived in the image of Renaissance Madonnas. . đAuguste Toulmouche, 'The Kiss' đc. 1870 Auguste Toulmouche was born in Nantes to Ămile Toulmouche, a well-to-do broker, and Rose Sophie Mercier. He studied drawing and sculpture locally with the sculptor AmĂ©dĂ©e MĂ©nard and painting with the portraitist Biron before moving to Paris in 1846 to study with the painter Charles Gleyre. He was said to be one of Gleyre's favored students, and he exhibited his first paintings at the Paris Salon in 1848 when he was just 19. He exhibited again in 1849 and 1850, by which time he has begun to specialize in portraits. Toulmouche painted in an idealizing version of the dominant academic realist style, and his subjects were frequently Parisian women who belonged to the upper bourgeoisie. His work was popular in both France and America, and the emperor Napoleon III bought one of his portraits, La fille (The Girl), for his future empress EugĂ©nie in 1852, with further purchases by the imperial family the following year confirming Toulmouche's status as a fashionable painter. He was generally approved by critics, winning medals at the Paris Salon in 1852 and 1861, and he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1870. During his heyday, his reputation was comparable to that of artists like Alfred Stevens and Carolus-Duran. However, with their emphasis on sumptuous clothing and richly furnished domestic interiors, his paintings were also dismissed by some critics as "elegant trifles", and the writer Ămile Zola referred somewhat dismissively to the "delicious dolls of Toulmouche". With the rise of Impressionism in the 1870s, his popularity suffered a decline from which it never recovered. . đ Sir Oswald Birley, 'The Green Masque' đ 1922 Sir Oswald Birley (1880 -1952) was one of Britainâs most successful portrait painters. From 1919 until the early 1950s he was the go-to artist of the time, commissioned by the Royal family, the aristocracy, politicians, artists, scientists âleading figures of their day. His work hangs in many of the UKâs major palaces, country houses, institutions and private homes; his paintings rarely leave the walls which they were designed to adorn. The subject of the painting is the artist's wife, Rhoda Vava Mary Lecky Pike (1900â1981). Rhoda later founded the Charleston Manor Festival. The couple had two children. . đ Diego Velazquez, 'Las Meninas' đ1657 This is one of VelĂĄzquez`s largest paintings and among those in which he made most effort to create a complex and credible composition that would convey a sense of life and reality while enclosing a dense network of meanings. The artist achieved his intentions and Las Meninas became the only work to which the writer on art Antonio Palomino devoted a separate section in his history of Spanish painters of 1724, entitling it In which the most illustrious work by Don Diego VelĂĄzquez is described. Since then the painting has never lost its status as a masterpiece. From Palomino we know that it was painted in 1656 in the Cuarto del PrĂncipe in the AlcĂĄzar in Madrid, which is the room seen in the work. He also identifies most of the figures of the court servants grouped around the Infanta Margarita, who is attended by two of the Queen`s meninas or maids-ofhonour: MarĂa Agustina Sarmiento and Isabel de Velasco. In addition to that group, we also see the artist himself working on a large canvas, the dwarves Mari BĂĄrbola and Nicolasito Pertusato, the latter provoking a mastiff, and the lady-in-waiting Marcela de Ulloa next to a guardadamas (attendant), with the chamberlain JosĂ© Nieto standing in the doorway in the background. Reflected in the mirror are the faces of Philip IV and Mariana of Austria, the Infanta`s parents who are watching the scene taking place. The figures inhabit a space that is modelled not just through the laws of scientific perspective but also through aerial perspective. In the definition of this space the multiplication of the light sources plays an important role. Hugues Merle became a friend of Paul Durand-Ruel in the early 1860s. Durand-Ruel had started buying paintings by Merle in 1862 and introduced the artist to painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Merle was later often compared to Bouguereau and âbecame a considerable rival of Bouguereau in subject and treatmentâ. In the mid-1860s, Merle painted several portraits of Paul Durand-Ruel, his wife, and their son, John.
