Something very special I made for my Mom's birthday. When my Granny passed away a few years ago, I was given a box of pearl buttons with their "slugs" and half formed pearls. You can see the larger piece of shell in the background where the "slugs" have been cut out. The a Dey family came over in about 1904 and they had a factory north of Philadelphia where they made mother of pearl buttons until world war two when they couldn't get shell from the South Pacific. That's when they begin to make Plastic buttons. My Granny always said they were pioneers in the plastic button industry. I remember she had jars and jars of all kinds of buttons that I would play with then I was little. Family history can be so fascinating. I'm so glad I finally had a chance to make this for my Mom who holds it very dear to her.
