@lacaycedo + movimiento #RíosVivos bringing attn to the collapse of the #HidroItuango dam displacing thousands of families in #Colombia • Donate - Link in her bio • 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 Repost from @lacaycedo - I want to share pics from my install at #MadeInLA2018 at the #hammermuseum , that opened last weekend. I am very honored to be part of this community, but it has been a bittersweet experience for me, and I haven't quite fully been able to celebrate. This is why: I made the installation made of fishing nets hanging in the courtyard. These nets are sourced from fisherfolk in Colombia, and some of the friends who gave me those nets are in a very difficult moment today, as the biggest Infrastructure project in construction in Colombia, the #HidroItuango hydroelectric dam, is about to collapse. Since late April the diversion tunnel crumbled, and the reservoir started to fill, without the dam wall being finished. Thousands of families from two departments are evacuated and living in miserable conditions due to lack of humanitarian response from both government and company (#EPM -Empresas Publicas de Medellin). Two members of the Movimiento #RíosVivos Colombia, that I´m part of, were assassinated in early May in the context of popular protests after the first evacuations. Yesterday I got a message from friends who lost their homes, that food in shelters is running out, that there is a military cordon that doesn´t allow them to move from shelters, and that company has prohibited the entrance of alternative media into the shelters. This is the worst environmental crime in the history of Colombia and we are still learning how to cope with it, with the extra layer of decades of armed conflict in the region. Two urgent calls : -One for donations, international can be done via Global Forest Coalition, link on bio: https://globalforestcoalition.org/urgent-help-needed-for-those-affected-by-the-dam-tragedy-in-colomb -Two, does any of you have contact with engineers, scientists, activists who have been involved in dam decommissioning? I am thinking Elwha River in Washington State in US, for example? I am happy to respond any questions personally, please replicate this information.
