We’re just grains of sand, man… This shot was taken on my trusty 600mm lens from over a mile away, which has become more and more of a landscape lens this past year than a wildlife lens! I love how it’s able to compress people against a vast background. Also saves me having to huff as much gear to get fun angles! #deathvalley
Drove through a storm in the San Gabriel Mountains today with @john_corgi and found some sanctuary in Mueller Tunnel. Built in 1942, it was technically passable by vehicles but is now blocked by several large boulders.
This is my “sah dude” face haha. Woke up at 6 AM to shoot sunrise in Death Valley. Best way to start 2018 off! Photo by @nflotography
Happy New Year! No better way to start 2018 off than photography with @squawkt22
JMT Day 19. Mile 211. Elevation 14,505. The “I can take a shower again” face. Super thankful for having @dwojtkun on the trail with me for this journey. It was a dream we both shared while in Fiji and it was such a rewarding experience carrying it out to this very moment. Needless to say, beer and pizza was on the menu as soon as we got back to lone pine! Cheers! #jmt2017 #rei #optoutside
JMT Day 19: Mile 211. 14,505’ elevation. WE MADE IT! A beautiful sunrise peaks over the horizon as we walk our final steps on the JMT. Clouds are ripping by us as high speed winds chill us to our bones. The view is a feast for the eyes , a grand panorama of the high sierra into the Owens Valley, but the moment is fleeting. We are passing through clouds that shroud this sacred view. I know we are on a timer now, and I take as many photos as possible, despite the strong winds, for no more than 5 minutes before we are swallowed permanently by thick clouds. Regardless of conditions, it is one of the most beautiful and desirable sunrises I’ve ever shot in my life, and the best way to end such a wonderful journey. #jmt2017 #rei #optoutside @rei
JMT Day 19: Mile 211. Our path turns to the east towards the rising sun. I can see the top! Purples and pinks begin to fill the sky as my pace quickens! I start crying bittersweet tears as I realize our long journey is almost over. I press on towards the light. #jmt2017 #rei @rei #optoutside
JMT: Day 19. Mile 209. 13,800’ altitude. We eagerly wake at 3 AM to calm skies! The silent shores of guitar lake are moonlit and mist hangs in the air as we slam down a quick breakfast and gather our things to begin our early morning trek. We look up the switchbacks to see the tiniest headlamps marching upwards, which only makes us walk faster to catch up! The climb is narrow at parts with steep drop-offs. We take breaks to catch our breath and enjoy the serene moonlit sierra. As we approach discovery cove, which is a point of return after we summit Whitney, we excitedly dump our heavy bags and continue on with only headlamps and snacks/water. Clouds begin to roll in shortly after this exchange, and an ultralight hiker returning from Whitney remorsefully tells us he was unable to summit due to low visibility, low temps and high speed winds. We decide to push on anyway and are swallowed by clouds for most of the approach. As we pass the windows of Whitney we’re almost blown off the the trail by strong gusts of wind! The light of dawn gets brighter and the clouds begin to subside as I take this photo of Derek. We’re so close to the top! #jmt2017
