丝 [pinyin: sī] silk Silk is a strong and fiber material produced by silkworms. The earliest example of silk fabric was found in Henan province [pinyin: Hénán shěng] 河南省, and was used around 4000 years ago during Shang 商代 [pinyin: Shāngdài] and Zhou dynasties周代 [pinyin: Zhōudài]. In Chinese culture, silk was a very important status symbol, because only the members of royal family and nobles were allowed to wear silk. Merchants and peasants weren’t allowed to wear silk until the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) 清代 [pinyin: Qīngdài]. Chinese wanted to keep a secret for the process of making silk. Silkworm farming was originally restricted to women and many women worked in this industry. Silk was used for making fine clothes, musical instruments, fishing net, paper, bowstrings, and canvas for painting, also fans, wall hangings, banners. Exposing the secret or taking silkworms out of China could mean a death sentence. It had been kept as a secret for over 1000 years, when in 6th century two monks smuggled some silkworms out of the country. As silk was the most important export for much of China’s history, the trade route to the West became known as the Silk Road 丝绸之路 [pinyin: Sīchóu zhī lù]. It was created during the Han dynasty 汉代 [pinyin: Hàndài] in the 2nd century. The main route started at Xī'ān 西安, went through the desert and finally reaching the coast of the Mediterranean sea, and then continuing to Europe and North Africa. Silk Road was used to export culture, language and the new ideas, which were transmitted by traders, diplomats, monks, and travelers. Also, Silk Road help to spread religions in Asia, especially Buddhism 佛教 [pinyin: Fójiào] from India to China and passed on to Korea and Japan.
