SPOTLIGHT ON BUZZ #3 /14 💙 To help Buzz settle in, Sayo put him inside his hooded sweatshirt a lot and it worked wonders for him. Before long, Buzz would call out to him from the joey room, Sayo would walk in and lean down, and Buzz would hop straight into his sweatshirt. The warmth, closeness and heartbeat was exactly what Buzz needed to feel safe. And lots of bottles of milk of course! He also learnt quickly, to call for us, almost exactly an hour before his bottle was due, just to ensure we didn’t forget. If you know me you know my crazy love of trees and hummingbirds! And since it’s Earth Day....This first vid is from my friends over @portlandaudubon Read below for a reminder from them regarding tree trimming this spring and watching out for these incredible babies. The 2nd pic is a hummingbird nest at my sweet neighbors @trinabervin house and the 3rd is my sweet Itty Bitty visiting me under my Ash tree. These baby Anna's Hummingbirds, who are now being cared for in our Wildlife Care Center, were separated from their parents when someone cut the limb their nest was on. SPECIAL PATIENT: This young Honey badger (Mellivora capensis) was hand raised after his mother had died. He was transferred to our facility for the next step in his rehabilitation process. This species needs specialised care and our senior rehabilitation manager, Nicci Wright, is especially skilled in rehabilitating honey badgers. He is in excellent health and is eating very well. Their natural diet consists of rodents, reptiles, invertebrates and birds - at our facility he is eating mice, insects and quail. At the moment, feeding him costs around R150 per day! While there are cheaper food options, feeding them a diet as close to their natural one as possible, gives optimal nutrition while stimulating the feeding instinct and prey recognition. This all aids in the success of their eventual release. We prefer not to compromise on any step of their rehabilitation process. We’d love it if you’d consider sponsoring a meal or two. Happy Earth Day from NMLC 🌏. When we rehabilitate and release our animals we are giving them a second chance that they wouldn’t have had otherwise. Let’s give them the BEST possible chance to thrive by doing a few things to make the earth a better place for them and us! A quick and easy place to start that we love is the @take3forthesea initiative. Simply remove and properly dispose of three (or more) pieces of garbage when you visit a beach. A few more simple choices you can make are to: • use less and purchase less plastic • ditch the plastic straws • Skip the bottled water for a reusable water bottle • consider eating less animal products (Meatless Monday is a great start) 📷:NMLC Volunteer @andrea_spence

It’s been LOONY around here!!! We’ve lost count of how many calls we’ve gotten about downed diving ducks lately. The weather has massively effected their migration. Here’s a few pictures of the animals we’ve had come through. A good number have already been released but we do still have some in our care. As you may know, birds like loons, grebes, and mergansers cannot take off from land. They must have water to fly from due to their anatomy. Since they are diving ducks, their feet and legs are situated further back then what you would see on a goose or duck to provide the power to swim and dive. Sometimes these birds will land on wet pavement, mistaking the shiny surface for a body of water. They end up a literally sitting duck, unable to fly away. All of them were formerly illegally kept as pets. When Sokny arrived at ACCB a little more than a year ago, he was very weak due to an inadequate and insufficient diet. Since, he luckily has grown into a healthy happy #gibbon . Can you see the black hairs appearing on his head? He’s currently starting to change his color. This Great-horned owlet was found on the ground next to a dead sibling. Great horned owls do not build their own nests; they take over old hawk and crow nests or find hollow cavities in trees. Sometimes the nests come apart and the babies fall to the ground. Today our Arial division will be re-nesting this little one by using a laundry basket. They will secure it high up in the same tree making new nest for the owlet to grow up. This isn’t a plant post but in the spirit of Earth day I thought this would be fitting- A couple days ago my children spotted a dead squirrel in the road. Of course this saddened me because I feed the squirrels and birds in my backyard every day and love watching them. Yesterday two hungry baby squirrels came right up to me when I was on the patio. I immediately remember the deceased squirrel in the road and knew these two belonged to her. I contacted our local wildlife rehab center and they will be well taken care of. They jumped from their leaf nest located in a tree in our front yard (so scary for them) and I am so glad they did. It’s always been a wish of mine to rescue a squirrel and yesterday that wish came true! >>BREAKING NEWS<< We have released 3 more orangutans back into the wild! On the 19th of April Bembi, Joy and Molly got released in Betung Kerihun national park, which is over 800.000 hectares of pristine rainforest. Within no time they managed to find all sorts of food in their new home and Molly couldn't get enough of making various nests along the day. At the end of the day heavy rain was pooring down the sky till the orangutans as well as the monitoring team were soaking wet. Through the many raindrops the monitoring team still managed to see all three of them making a nest up in the trees, close together and not far from the release site. Bembi customised one of Molly's nests. For the next few weeks they will be observed by the monitoring team to be sure they are behaving like wild orangutans and successfully released.
