According to family lore, William Levine moved to Maine in the 1880s because Maine peddler licenses were half the price of those in Massachusetts. After a few years on the road, he established a men’s clothing store that remained an anchor of Waterville’s Main Street until 1996. By 1914, two of William’s sons (Louis and Percy, or Ludy and Pacy, as they were know ) decided to go into partnership with their father, giving up future studies in medicine and law.
