We’re so sad to say goodbye to Zanzibar. Initially we had only planned to stay for a week, but we loved it so much we decided to move from Nungwi to Paje and spend another week in the sun! From our summer holiday, tomorrow we get back on the bikes and it feels like we are going back to work... still bring on Malawi! . . . #zanzibar #bestbeaches #paradise #beachbums #paje @bikewander #cycle #bicycletouring #baaw #wymtm #bikelife #girlswhocycle #tourdafrique #cairo2capetown #bikewander #tanzania

#dakar #kafountine #saintlouis #ziguinchor #lacrose #roselake #Senegal #gorée #tourdafrique #afrique #recalling #lifegoeson #lifeisbeautiful #cestlavie

Local fishermen heading out at dawn on the Ngalawa boats, which are carved from single logs. The white sails are an iconic symbol of the East Tanzanian coast and are part of the living heritage which hasn’t been lost over the generations. We cross the strait to Zanzibar today on a very different boat, with an out board motor and a hull made of fibre glass and metal. Not quite as romantic is it? I hope that we are not some of the last people to witness this humble way of life, as it feels as fragile and as transitory as many other remote ways of life we have encountered on our travels. . #zanzibar #whatdoesthefuturehold #tryingtobeoptimistic . . #cycle #bicycletouring #kenya #baaw #wymtm #bikelife #girlswhocycle #tourdafrique #cairo2capetown #bikewander
(2014) Made a promise to myself today. Tour d’Afrique is an epic 4-month ride from Cairo to Capetown. For the less insane, there are 10-20 day segments to jump on, doing about 110 km/day. This went on my bucket list back when I started doing long-distance rides in 2010. It came off in recent years due to grad school and four knee surgeries. . Screw it. Back on the list. Reunited with my sweet Trek today after 4 years out of the country and she felt fantastic. . Africa 2019...I’m coming for you. So we are taking an unexpected rest day after only 1 days cycling since our rest in Arusha. Why? you ask. Well, to put it briefly... Bed Bugs! While waiting for all of our clothes to be washed, we have to spend the day sitting around drinking coffee, eating burgers and watching films... poor us! . . . #flatwhitedontletthebedbugsbite #ohbugger #disaster . . #cycle #bicycletouring #kenya #baaw #wymtm #bikelife #girlswhocycle #tourdafrique #cairo2capetown #bikewander #coffee #flatwhitelife #baristababes
Day 1 in Tanzania to Arusha. Slow climbing towards Mt Meru was enjoyably gradual, we managed to avoid the rain and we even caught our first glimpse of Mt Kilimanjaro! There’s also a surprising amount of Maasai tribes people in northern Tanzania, dressed in their traditional clothes and adorned with beautiful jewellery... we must get a photo when the time is right 🙃 . . . . #hellotanzania #justKILIngtime . . #cycle #bicycletouring #kenya #baaw #wymtm #bikelife #girlswhocycle #tourdafrique #cairo2capetown #bikewander
Cycling allows me to travel and live fully every single meter of each ride. Maybe lately im getting a bit too much into it, but if I feel good, why should I stop :) ? 📷 from a couple of months ago, a few km away from Montagu with 200k in the legs and a few climbs in the arms. . . . . . . . . . . . #cycling #roadbike #tourdafrique #cyclinglife #travelling #exploring #road #wanderlust #sunset #mycanyon #montagu #southafrica #allIcan #ride #expatlife
Goodbye Kenya, you’ve been beautiful. For many reasons it’s been our favourite country so far: we’ve been on safari for free with only our bikes to protect us. We’ve been through so many varied landscapes from volcanic rock fields, to savannah grasslands, to incredible mountains, Kenya has it all. But the best thing about Kenya was the people: the kindest kids, helpful local and generally all round great company. Thanks Kenya. We’ll be back 🇰🇪 ❤️ . . . . #Goodbyekenya #whymaasaileave #hellotanzania . . #cycle #bicycletouring #kenya #baaw #wymtm #bikelife #girlswhocycle #tourdafrique #cairo2capetown #bikewander
Animals are definitely not the most dangerous thing we encounter on this trip, as most cycle tourists will agree, traffic is! And entering or exiting a capital city is about as dangerous as it gets. Leaving Nairobi required nerves of steel and lots of breaks. . . . . #Justkeepmoving #ihatecars #traffichell . #cycle #bicycletouring #kenya #baaw #wymtm #bikelife #girlswhocycle #tourdafrique #cairo2capetown #bikewander

Day 119, Stage 89 - Reibeeck Kasteel to Cape Town Distance: 93km Milestone: we arrived in Cape Town and completed the Tour d’Afrique! Today was an incredible day as our long journey comes to an end, we made it to Cape Town! I broke my rule of only posting 1-2 photos because there were so many great moments today. We received our tour jerseys yesterday evening during mock awards and were all excited to wear them today. It was odd seeing everyone in matching shirts that weren’t part of wardrobe for the past four months! We headed out in a cool morning with some large rolling hills and passing through small towns. We had one last coke stop where I got my new favorite snack, chutney flavored chips, and a giant can of Fanta. We spotted Table Mountain from a long way away, it was cool to see our destination getting closer throughout the day! We got onto the coast road with a beautiful bike lane and stopped for lunch at 76km. After a nice lunch of fancy cheese, crackers, meat and fruit we convoyed the last 17km all together to our destination in Cape Town. We had a police escort and a nice flat road as we sailed along the last part of our journey. We concluded this Stage on the beach with family and friends waiting for us, it was so exciting! Thanks Dad for coming such a long way to celebrate this accomplishment with me! Once we’d all taken pictures we did a small reception inside the hotel where we received our finisher medals. Later this evening we’ll have one last event all together, the final dinner, after which we’ll all be going our separate ways. Thanks to all the riders and staff that made this tour such an amazing experience. This has been an incredible journey and I’ve made incredible friends, I really hope our paths cross again, hopefully on another exciting adventure! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #southafrica

Today’s the day! All smiles, we begin our final ride together into Cape Town.
Day 118, Stage 88 - Elandsbay to Reibeeck Kasteel Distance: 143km Today we started our second to last day with a detour to shorten the route to make up for some extra kilometers yesterday. Thankfully we started with a tailwind and it was a warm wind, it felt so good! We had about 7km of dirt through a little fishing village and along the railway tracks next to the coast, it was a beautiful start to the day. We’ve started seeing signs for Kaapstad, Cape Town in Afrikaans. We’re getting so close! We had some small rolling hills today with a bit of a headwind. After lunch we turned onto a local highway that required us to have a police escort so we split into three groups and carried on through the afternoon together. We spotted some wildlife including ostriches and giraffes and finished the day at yet another beach camp. This evening we did mock awards where the staff gave us fun awards and we did the same for the staff. It was a great way to say thanks and poke some fun at each other! We’ve got our plan to ride into the City tomorrow, we’re so excited to ride our last day and meet all our family and friends at the finish line, I can’t wait to see you Dad! It’s amazing that our four month adventure is coming to an end, it’s been absolutely incredible. #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #southafrica
Day 117, Stage 87 - Strandfontein to Elandsbay Distance: 109km Today we were expecting a much shorter route but due a last minute change we weren’t able to cycling on a particular road. Our staff did a great job finding us a new route and we had a beautiful day cycling along the coast and local farm land. The route included over 50km of dirt in the morning so myself and several other riders decided to skip the dirt and ride the 43km from lunch. It was a short day but I throughly enjoyed it, we saw a small herd on Springbok which ran away when we stopped to take pictures. It was quite cold this morning and it took us a bit to finally get going and warm up. Our ride ended with a long steep downhill into town and to our beautiful camp right on the beach. Several riders braved a dip in the cold water, the surf was quite rough so I decided not to go in. I’m hoping for a warmer morning tomorrow but we’ll see! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #southafrica
Day 116, Stage 86 - Garies to Strandfontein Distance: 162km Today was a long day and we finally reached the coast! I only rode half the day. After some rolling hills on the highway in the morning we had a long dirt stretch after lunch. I made it a few kilometers before the truck caught us and jumped in. We also wanted to make it to camp while there was a good bit of light left so we enjoy our beautiful campsite overlooking the beach. It was a bit overcast when we got there but it cleared up and watch a beautiful sunset over the Atlantic Ocean! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #southafrica
Day 115, Stage 85 - Springbok to Garies Distance: 116km Today was a shorter day with some big rolling hills and a couple of epic descents. Our top speed was 60km/h on a 6km downill! We’re continuing along the highway towards the coast and am passing many towns with names we can’t pronounce, but was always give it a try! Our planned campsite was under construction so we’re staying in guest houses in town. I’m so excited to sleep in a bed tonight! We’re also planning a girls night tonight with drinks, snacks and a movie but I’m not confident in my ability to stay up much past 8pm! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #southafrica
Day 114, Stage 84 - Felix Unite Camp to Springbok Distance: 133km Milestones: we crossed into our 10th and final country, South Africa and we crossed 10,000km! This morning we rode a few kilometers to the South African border. The border crossing was quick and we were welcomed into the country with a 30km climb. It was an average of 2% which wasn’t tough but there was quite a headwind that picked up through the morning, it was a long morning! The rest of the day was rolling hills which was nicer. We’re heading southwest towards the coast and I can’t wait to see the ocean! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #southafrica
Day 113 - Rest Day at Felix Unite Camp Today is our last Rest day! We’re camped on the Orange River which flows along the border of Namibia and South Africa. Several riders did a canoe trip on the river. All of us sorted our bags and did some bike maintenance in preparation for our last week. I finished journal number two and started my third journal given to me by my awesome sister, thanks Booger! I’ve written over 400 pages so far and am looking forward to documenting the last stretch of our tour! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #namibia
Our final camp set up, we are less then 100kms from Cape Town, and we can feel the buzz in the air.

We are officially coastal and taking in the ocean breeze as the sun sets.
A tropical lunch spot. It’s bittersweet as we approach the end of the tour, but there is no shortage of beauty as we cycle on towards the coast!
WATCH OUT CAPE TOWN... I'M COMING FOR YOU!!! 😁😁😎🇿🇦
Day 112, Stage 83 - Canon Resthouse to Felix Unite Camp Distance: 171km Today’s scenery consisted of sand, rocks, mountains and... vineyards? Our last full day in Namibia was full of changing scenery. We had dirt for 129km before hitting the tarmac to finish the day at 171km. That was way too much dirt for me so I went from lunch at 91km and did the last 80km by myself. I still had over 30km of dirt which was plenty enough for me! Once we hit the tarmac there was a steady headwind which made that last stretch difficult. I wasn’t in a hurry and just kept a steady pace to make it to camp. I was expecting some of the faster riders to catch me but they didn’t. Everyone felt the wind, it was a tough day and the last of the riders doing the full day made it into camp just as the sun was going down. We’ve got our last Rest day tomorrow then our final stretch to Cape Town! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #namibia
Day 111, Stage 82 - Seeheim to Canon Resthouse Distance: 93km Today’s route brought us to the Fish River Canyon which is the second largest canyon in the world. We had a shorter distance so we could spend some time sightseeing once we got there. Erin, Agnes and I decided 93km of dirt wouldn’t be short enough for us to get in early so we all decided to go from lunch at 65km and do the last 28km together into camp. We had a beautiful sunrise and some rolling hills, we had a great day. We made it to camp first and the dinner truck hadn’t made it. As other riders were coming in we learned that the dinner truck had gotten stuck. We were so glad we skipped the first part of the day, the road conditions were not good! After two hours of digging the truck made it out and continued to camp. Several riders took an afternoon trip to the main view point of the canyon, it is quite impressive. Tomorrow we’ll be riding along the canyon for the first part of the day as we finish up our last day of dirt in Namibia! #tourdafrique #coopcycles #optoutside #adventureisoutthere #nuunambassador2018 #namibia
