Deep in the heart of ostrich country! Ostriches have been farmed in the Karoo from as far back as 1826. The enormous demand for ostrich feathers from the 1860s until the start of World War One lead to an economic boom in the little Karoo. Farmers in small towns, like Calitzdorp, made a fortune. Disease and the war lead to huge decreases in the number of birds but the industry limped on. Only in the past few decades has the industry started bouncing back, focusing on ostrich leather and meat, rather than feathers.
