We were looking at the ‘before’ photos from just after we bought the house and this space was inaccessible, covered in heather and all kinds of other over grown shrubs, had two huge trees down the side and filled to the top with soil. We have slowly dug all of that soil out and put terraces in to make the space a little safer! The garden!! One reason people were put off from buying our house was that they felt the garden was very dark and small - and it definitely looked it. But I could see how amazing it would be. So in February we started to dig. And dig some more. We pulled up weeds, stripped back thick ivy, pulled down a shed and dug up established bushes which we felt bad about but we needed to let the light in and see the garden. We didn’t leave much apart from 4 roses. It’s exhausting work but so worth it to see the difference it made! . Facts: Its 40ft long, 15 ft wide and is officially east facing (a negative in the property world) but actually we are on a slope so it’s south to the right. Our backyard homestead is on a steep hillside (hence the name 😊). So making things level is always the biggest challenge. 😑 To make some level gardening space, we bought empty sand bags and filled them with our clay soil to build our retaining walls. It was cheap, but ohh so labor intensive. 😲 #timeormoney It took months to build just 750sqft of flat growing space. 💪 My poor husband. #mancrush We've continued to add compost and mulch to build up our soil, but I've maxed out this growing space. In my Nonna's terraced gardens, a few years ago. An Eden amongst the hot arid southern Italian hills. I capture this moment in her space. The happiest I saw her was in this Eden, tending the plants as she walks by as though it is a fluid motion that is second nature to her. She talks to me as she walks, explaining the flowers and the fruit, and then in the other terraces how she irrigates in such an arid climate. Her techniques are ancient, that have been passed down for generations and honed for her own gardens and with her own wisdom. Having my daughters there filled her heart like I never expected. Her smile was from ear-to-ear and my heart swelled at the joy I created by bringing my daughters to her and giving her this opportunity to connect with them, and them to her.
