I DID IT!!! Finished the Arizona 70.3 around 7:34!! I honestly didn't think I could make the cutoff on the swim, I finished in 1:08!! The cutoff was 1hr and 10mins, I was the last person in my age group to finish the swim. There was another guy in my group who was struggling with me, we kept motivated each other to finish, and we did!!! After the swim I barely have any energy to walk to the bike, so I just took my time for the bike. The 18 miles loop gone by pretty fast, I finished the first loop just a little over an hour. Then 2nd and 3rd loop were a little slower, which I don't mind, I had lots of people passed me but I try not to let that bother me cuz I know my pace. Finished the bike around 3:35. Then the Run was a slow victory lap, 2 loops of 6.5ish mile, finished around 2:45. I now finished 2 Half Ironman in 6 months!!! No more 70.3 until Oceanside next year. #tempe703 #az703 #imaz703

We are prepping our triathletes that will be "graduating" next week on their first long-distance triathlon in Tempe. Every year, Dax and I bring our new ones to Tempe. Most of these members were at "zero" with only cycling or running as their background. Most have never swam. Last year we brought three: Butch, Stephanie, and Michelle. This year, we are about to mob Tempe: Together with our seasoned triathletes: Dax, Deo, Luigi, Stephanie, and Michelle; we now have our first timers: Aileen, Angelika, Gamy, Eugene, Jimmy, Lowell, and Andrew. They are ready and I can't wait to see them all cross the finish line next week. My coach: This picture is one of my all time favorite race pics! And my race recap wouldn't be complete without mentioning @kristimonks I was a little apprehensive about a new coach and one that was also such a good friend. Well, the change was one of the best things I've done. Kristi has been there for me at all my races this year and Sunday was no different. She was everywhere on that course. And Kristi is one of the best cheerleaders around!! But this moment, this is what I love her for the most. This was the start of the second loop of the run. It was hot, I was tired and I was ready to be done. And this is where Kristi reminded me how hard I'd worked for this day. As she left me to do my thing she said, "now go make me proud and more importantly, make yourself proud!" It was exactly what I needed to hear in that moment. I've made a lot of progress in 2016 and I know it's through a great plan, a great coach and following that plan. After some time off, I'm excited to start prepping and planning for next season. The finish line: This video perfectly captures all the emotions of the finish line. I've pictured this finish line for months. I've worked so hard for it and when I finally reached it there were tears of joy, of exhaustion, of accomplishment. There is something magical about an Ironman finish line. And this one was no different. I knew I had set a big PR and I knew my coach @kristimonks and my sherpas @emm_hemm & @jubielou2 would be there waiting for me. I crossed that finish line knowing I had given it my all and knowing that Kristi would be there waiting to give me that hug. The run: By far this is my favorite disciple of triathlon. I started as a runner and it will always be my love. However, I've always struggled with the running in a triathlon. Between poor nutrition on the bike and not managing my power, I've set myself up for some truly terrible runs. Sunday was completely different. I got off the bike and my legs felt great! I knew this had a lot to do with my nutrition on the bike and with all my training. It was now go time! I knew it would be a hot one and had prepared in advance. I drank so much the week leading up to the race and had my game plan set for that run course. I knew I'd need to walk through every aid station, get water, ice and consume my @baseperformance salt to keep from bonking. The first loop was rough but there was no way I was stopping or taking more walk breaks than planned. It was so great to see @my_world_by_jason out on the run. When I made it around to the second loop I knew I'd see my cheering section and my coach. I'd given her specific things to tell me when I saw her on that second loop. And she reminded me that 1) I wasn't going to die 2) my legs weren't going to fall off and 3) it was just mile repeats to the finish. That brief conversation put a pep in my step and I was able to keep pushing. On that second loop I passed 7 girls in my age division and countless others. The bike: I'm always happy to be out of the water and onto my bike. This isn't my strongest discipline but I've worked hard over the past year to get stronger on the bike. The #imaz703 bike course is unlike any I've ever ridden. It's a 3 loop course with multiple turns and u-turns on each loop. The good: I got to see my cheering section 3 or 4 times on each loop. The bad: all those turns! Just when I'd get comfortable in aero position it was time to slow down for another turn. The ugly: I definitely have some work to do on my bike handling skills. All that being said, I had a blast on the bike. I couldn't stop smiling. I also nailed my nutrition which I know set me up for a great run. I've always struggled with my nutrition on the bike but since switching to @carborocket my nutrition has been spot on! The swim: I always dread the swim start. I just want to get going and get the race started. All the nerves leading up to the swim are the worst!! But once I get started everything is good. I was so relieved that the race was wetsuit legal. I knew I could do the swim but also knew that the wetsuit would be a great help. As soon as the race stared, I quickly got into a rhythm and got going. One day I hope I can swim just a little straighter! With the water temps being so high I started to get super warm in the second half. It was definitely motivating to get out of that water and get that wet suit off. This wasn't my fastest swim, but I definitely felt great the entire swim. I used all the tips I learned from @swimfirst and the @rokasporta R1 goggles made sighting so easy. . . . #findfaster #swim #swimstart #swimbikerun
#medalmonday I've worked for months for this medal. 2016 didn't go as planned...I was so sick I couldn't race Oceanside in March. I signed up for St. George at the last minute and had some of the worst weather I've ever raced in. At the Toughman Utah Half, the swim was cancelled. I've been chasing my PR all season. And finally, yesterday at my last race of the season it happened. Today's easy run was out at a nature preserve (or something like that) My sherpas @emm_hemm and @jubielou2 needed to have some fun too. So while they hiked to the hole in the rock, I did a quick bike and found this great dirt trail for a run. I'm super excited for tomorrow. I've worked so hard to get ready for this race. And no matter what happens I'm going to be proud of my day. My #1 goal is to have fun and do race my best! Finish line Friday...that's a thing, right? I've been thinking a lot about this race lately. Last year Boulder 70.3 was supposed to be my perfect race. That smile you see is so deceptive....it only lasted for a second before I was in tears. I had a great swim and the best bike to date. And I paid dearly for that bike split on the run. I was so disappointed in that race and felt awful for my cute niece @brook.strat2 and her friend at the race with me. For most of the afternoon I just couldn't get past the disappointment. But thanks to great friends and family I was quickly pulled out of that depression. And I started to focus on the positives from that race. I learned a lot from that race. And all those lessons have helped me to be a better athlete. Can't wait for #imaz703 to put all that work to the test. I used to have a hate/hate relationship with my snorkel. Now it's mostly a love/love relationship. It's not a perfect relationship but I actually look forward to the snorkel swim when I see it in my schedule. It's just one of many things helping to make me a stronger swimmer. 9 days until #imaz703 and I'm feeling ready!
#tbt to the Kokopelli triathlon in 2012. This was the first time I went sub-3 hours in an Olympic distance triathlon. I remember working so hard toward this goal and it was a major accomplishment when it finally happened. It was also good enough for my first AG podium in triathlon. I've come a long way since then but still remember how happy I was when I crossed that finish line. Hard work and perseverance will get you to your goals! Run number 2 almost didn't happen today. But instead of my planned route, I headed out to the @ptowncross race and ran there. And, I couldn't be happier with my decision. Seriously, fall in Utah is my favorite! 🍂🍁🍂

Another Monday, another early morning session on my Computrainer. A nice easy zone 2 ride to get the legs ready for a couple more tough days on the bike. Arizona 70.3 is almost here and these legs are ready to race!
No training weekend in St. George would be complete without a swim at Sand Hollow. If you've followed me at all, you know swimming hasn't come naturally for me. And, to learn that Arizona 70.3 will likely not be wetsuit legal made me a bit nervous. So when I saw today, I used my swimskin. I was a little apprehensive at first but once I got going, I felt great! I've spent a lot of time to improve my swimming and today was just the confidence boost I needed!! And, let's talk about these goggles from @rokasports. Amazing!! I can't believe how easy it was to sight and zero glare from the sun. Today's workouts were he perfect way to end peak week. Bring on the taper!!
Not every workout is rainbows and unicorns! 🌈🦄 After a great ride, it was time to run. My run started out great and then quickly fell apart! 😩 I immediately knew what was wrong....I hadn't taken in nearly enough calories on the bike (I was off by about 100 calories per hour) Oops!! And since it was only a 35 minute run, I didn't take anything with me. Total rookie mistake!! And lesson learned. I know the importance of proper nutrition. And my coach @kristimonks and I already had a discussion about it (I'm pretty sure she told me to eat more donuts today 😂) But, better to make that mistake today than on race day!
Beautiful ride into the St. George sunrise. Last big ride before Arizona 70.3 and legs felt great. I can almost even say I love riding...I've come a long way this year on the bike to even consider saying that! Grateful for good company; it always makes riding much better when you have good company!

Today's run was a 90 minute endurance run. With everyone running the #stgeorgemarathon this weekend it was a solo session. It's one of the best runs I've had! I felt great the whole time and even had to force myself to slow down to stay within the pace my coach @kristimonks wanted me to maintain. This whole run I was so happy. I just couldn't stop smiling and feeling so grateful. As I ran I recognized just how blessed I am...I have a strong body and mind, I live in a beautiful place and I have amazing friends & family. There just isn't much more you can ask for in life. Only a couple more key sessions before beginning the taper for Arizona 70.3! I'm ready to race!
It's not all fun & games over here! With all the training I do, I have to take measures to prevent injuries. As much as I hate the torture of the foam roller, it's a necessary evil! I love my @tp_therapy foam roller! It's much more durable than previous ones I've owned and it allows me to get deeper into my muscles. It hurts so good!!

Physical strength is only one part of the equation. It's important but it will only get you so far. To truly succeed you must also have mental strength. And in my opinion, mental strength is even harder to build. During today's run I was talking with @jen8cho & @jenn2317 about this exact topic. Both of these girls are getting ready to run the #stgeorgemarathon on Saturday. We had a lot of discussion of what it takes to finish a marathon or any endurance event. The mental side of training is something I've been working on a lot this year. As I get closer to my big race I keep thinking of mantras I'm going to use to help me push through when things get tough. One I'm stealing from @ambersadventures is "you're not going to die!" What are your best mantras that get you through the tough parts of a race?
A little swim with almost all the toys! There was a time that I just swam. Since I've added in paddles, the buoy, kick sets & especially the snorkel I've seen great improvement in my swim. All of these work to make me a better and more efficient swimmer. Hopefully someday I'll also be a faster swimmer. 😕

I'm not much for posting my paces here on IG, but sometimes it's necessary. I e spent most of 2016 working to improve my run off the bike. I'm a runner at heart and have posted some decent PRs in the half-marathon and marathon. However, when it comes to running off the bike I've always struggled. There are 2 key things that have changed for me this year. 1) I stared coaching with @kristimonks through @balancedartmultisport. It's been a completely different run program than I'm used to and it's involved a lot of slower runs. I've trusted this method and watched my run times drop! 2) I've stared using @carborocket as my nutrition on the bike. Game changer! A few of you have asked, and this stuff really works!! I know getting calories in on the bike is critical to a good run. I'm now having no problem making this happen. @carborocket will definitely be with me at Arizona 70.3!
Today's workout was not exactly as I'd hoped. It's been nothing but rain here in Utah! That meant my 3.5 hour ride was moved inside to the trainer. Thanks to @keshiasawyer and @emm_hemm for keeping me entertained! . Even with the bad weather I was determined to get outside for my run. A quick change of clothes and I was out the door. About 15 minutes into my run, my phone died and I was without music. I was seriously tempted to just turn around...I was cold, wet and just unmotivated at that point. But, I reminded myself you don't get music on race day and you can't control everything. The only thing you can control is your attitude and reaction to events around you. So I had quick pity party I pulled myself together. It ended up being a great run!! After struggling to stay on pace, I made up lost time and finished exactly at my goal race pace. . Days like today are key for me. They remind me that I'm strong, I can push through when things get tough and I will conquer my goals! Only 3 weeks to Arizona 70.3 and I'm feeling strong!!
If I'm being honest, I didn't want to do today's workout. It was an easy sling followed by a recovery swim. And while missing the occasional workout won't ruin your training, there was no good reason to not get up and get it done. So that's exactly what I did. I always feel so much better after a workout. And an easy day is just what I needed before tomorrow's long brick! Happy Friday friends! Bring on the weekend and college football! 🏈
#tbt to the @runrevel Big Cottonwood half marathon. Still so happy about this race. It was a huge confidence booster for me. It was hard and hurt at times but I pushed through to finish strong. This race made me realize all my hard work is paying off and just how strong I've become. Can't wait to put it all together in Arizona in just over 3 weeks!
Easy treadmill miles followed by a core workout. It's amazing the difference a strong core makes. You use your core to maintain strength and power during the swim, on the bike and throughout the run. All of my best and fastest races have come during times when I've put in the work to have a strong core. Staying focused on the things that will keep me strong and set me up for the best race in Arizona.
There was I time I hated swimming with my snorkel. It was so awkward and uncomfortable I dreaded this swim. Now, I actually look forward to it and have even requested this be added to my schedule. Although I look ridiculously dorky, the snorkel helps me to work on my form and see where I can make improvements. Also, breathing through a straw is great to increase lung capacity and improve endurance.
Dear summer, thank you for staying around for one more day so I could enjoy every second of my afternoon run. Love, me 💟 . This is seriously one of my favorite workouts. A run in the morning and a second run in the afternoon for a total of 90 minutes. Legs always feel heavy but warm up quick on that second run. And, the extra warm day is perfect for the run in Arizona!
I was told the best way to test swim fitness for an @ironmantri or 70.3 was to do a straight 30 minutes swim. Well, today I did just that. I didn't get as far as I had hoped. But I did feel great and like I could've gone twice as far. Luckily I only have to swim a few minutes longer in Arizona! 🏊🏼♀️
