hot tub time machine 🛀🏻 • • • spending some time on the other side of hauraki gulf on the coromandel peninsula before heading south. it’s a popular summer destination for aucklanders with its close proximity to the city and idyllic white-sand beaches. a MUST see while there, hot water beach, our first introduction to the geothermal activity in the region. for two hours on either side of low tide, crowds flock to the sand with shovels in hand to dig personal hot tubs. two underground thermals running relatively close to one another, only accessible during this time, bubble hot water up through the sand. and, this water is HOT! too hot to even walk on the sand in some places. however, digging sometimes results in a dud with no warm water or hitting a channel with water at near boiling temps and the beach becomes littered with abandoned holes. so the trick is getting the temperature right - tapping into the hot springs while accessing enough cooler seawater. this place is like nothing we have ever seen and highly recommend a visit. truly extraordinary!
