Two soil improvers under this grapevine. Comfrey and hairy vetch. We love comfrey! It pulls beneficial minerals to the surface, its chopped leaves are a nitrogen-rich mulch, its leaves make a healing poultice on cuts and burns (it really works), it's hardy, it's purdy, it's easily divisible (10 starts have become 40). And hairy vetch is a nitrogen producer. #soilbuilders #soilimprovers #organicgardening #permaculture #texaspermaculture #comfrey
Fava time, a dual purpose edible crop. As a cover crop, they improve the soil texture, suppress the weeds, support microbials in the earth and they’re even edible to boot. We’ve only been growing Fava beans (Vicia faba) for the last 3 years, but it is a crop we will always grow. I fell in love with their black & white flowers, (will post images when that happens this year). Great for enriching lean or poor soil since legumes produce beneficial nodes that improve the health of the soil, since they ‘fix’ the nitrogen where it will remain in the soil. They also produce tasty beans that can be used fresh in so many recipes. Favas can also be dried, and reconstituted for later use as well. Favas tend to grow up to 24-30” (although I’ve heard some varieties can grow as much as 4’). After a 70 day wait to harvest (depending on the variety) they provide an amended soil, great for growing a quick crop like lettuce, spinach or some of the many different Brassicas. As with many of our vegetable crops we start early inside the Greenhouse as seen in photos #2 . We use the remaining snow from around the Greenhouse to water the newly planted beds #3 . In about another 4-5 weeks when the ground warms up a little bit more we will sow more Favas, thus ensuring succession planting and continual soil improvement.
Found this whopper of a dung beetle out in the paddock the other day. A reminder to me that as out of control as things seem right now waiting for rain, that nature is still at work doing its thing! #dungbeetles #natureatwork #workingwithnature #soilimprovers #trusting #morerainneeded #chemicalfree #holisticmanagement #lovewhatwedo #centralcoastnsw #farmtours #gracespringsfarm #kulnura
