27/04/18 Review of ‘The Allure of Dean Harper’ by R.S. Grey. ☀️☀️☀️☀️ Another hit by R.S. Grey! This author writes the best female characters I have ever read in romance. They are flawed, refreshing and utterly hilarious. Lily is our leading lady in 'The Allure of Dean Harper', and she is hilarious. She is also confident, strong and fairly stubborn, but in the best way. She doesn't take crap from anyone, and has such a strong voice in this novel. This book had me laughing out loud when I was reading it at home, and then snickering quietly when in public. There are a number of popular culture references which are spot on in this novel, as well as moments of everyday reverie which were really funny and relatable. The dialogue is the absolute hero of this book though. The banter is so sassy and cheeky, and you can't help but smile and giggle at it. Moreover, the dialogue reads as a normal conversation would between friends, and it makes you feel so invested in all of the characters and all of their differing relationships. I wasn't that big a fan of the actual romance however. I'm narrowing this down to two key reasons. The first being that I've never been a great lover of the hate-to-love trope, which Lily and Dean's romance very much is. The second reason was Dean as a love interest himself. He just wasn't particularly likeable, nor had many moments of redemption to make you feel differently. His characterisation just fell a bit flat. He felt rather two-dimensional, whereas Lily was a fully fleshed out and colourful realisation of a person. I think R.S. Grey put more effort forth in constructing Lily as our lead protagonist than she did into Dean as a love interest. Also, despite there being a said chemistry between these two mentioned in the writing, it was just that; A said chemistry, not an experienced chemistry. I neither felt it nor cared about it. What kept me interested in this story was Lily and the many great instances of humour. All in all, a really solid read. If the love-to-hate angle is your story of choice in romance, this one will be a winner for you no doubt. Four thumbs up!
