As I strolled out of the sacred Osun Grove, I stopped to look at a figurine, an abstract figure carved into the wall. But something disrupted this activity. As I turned, I saw this: a monkey on a monkey glaring straight at me. I stared back, at both monkeys. ▪️
The Sacred Grove is a perfect union of art and nature. This realization is an impossible miss for the conscious. However, as I crossed the threshold, I was given almost immediately to the art littered around the Grove.
I spent two hours in the osun grove, aided by a guide, marvelled by our collective heritage in various art forms: wood and iron, clay and brass. So, it was from this pleasant act of marvelling and appreciation that I was disrupted.
I stared back at both monkeys: nature on top, art below. 'The monkey on top' glared at me for a while, then strode off, leaving me, alone, with its imitation. It was then I realized that I had given no real care to the heritage of nature itself. For this act, I had been judged by a single stare, and found wanting. The verdict? The real left.
It is no wrong to love art, the imitation of reality. The sculptures here are glorious. But my wrong was, in loving one, I had neglected the other. I glossed over the reality from which the art was reproduced.
At that moment, and the time for which I was at the sacred Grove, I gave accolades to the white throat monkey, and the forest which it calls home. .
