The Pegasus Bridge is a bridge over the sea canal of Caen nearby Ouistreham. The bridge, also known as the Bénouville Bridge from the evening of June 5th until the afternoon of June 6th 1944 battle point and defence point against the German Army because this bridge and another bridge 360 meters from it were important crossing points over the river Orne to the other side of normandy. The attack of British paratrooper divisions under command of major John Howard, would become the first battle against the Germans on D-Day. The reason why the bridge became called Pegasus Bridge was because the paratroopers had an emblem on their shoulder with a Pegasus on it. The second battalion Ox and Bucks and 30 men of the 249th compagny Royal Engeniers (total soldiers: 181) were devided in 6 Horsa gliders and dropped, some a few hundred meters and 3 right next to the bridge. The occupation of the bridge was a battle of less then 15 minutes. The British expected to face 50 soldiers operating for the Third Reich, but not even the half of the amount of soldiers was at the bridge. Most of them were East European prisoners and Italian forced laborers. While a few Soldiers were rushing over the bridge, the platooncommander of the British (Den Brotheridge) was killed. He is seen as the first death of the Allied forces on D-Day. During the battle 2 French civil guards at the bridge were killed by British fire. Also the owner of café picot, who was standing outside, was killed by a German who was hiding near by him. When the bridge was occupied they found gear to blew up the bridge but without explosives attached to it. After that multiple counter attacks were dodged, for example Sergeant C. Thronthon dismanteled a German halftrack with a Cannon behind it. This vehicle blocked the way to Caen. At the end of D-Day. Only 2 British soldiers were killed and 5 injured. Also the café next to the bridge became the first house in allied hands on D-Day. #ww2 #dday #pegasusbridge #britisharmy #raf #royalairforce #paratroopers #june5th #june6th #june6th1944 #latenormanyflashback #normandy #overlord #ww2life #caen #france #germansoldier #cafépicot #firstbeliberated #15minutes

The Mulberry Harbour’s A and B were temporary harbours made of floating concrete pontoons and metal structures. Mulberry was a codename for the two pop-up harbours in Normandy. Mulberry A was the harbour made in the American sector of Omaha Beach in Vierville-Saint-Laurent. Mulberry B was in the English sector of Gold Beach. B was located in Arromanche, closer by Caen and Bayeux then A. A was closer by Carentan and the peninsula of Normandy where the famous village Sainte-Mère-Église and Cherbourg are located. The remains of what were once huge structures floating on sea are still visible and when it’s low tide you can take a closer look to the remains of these harbour’s. But why were these megastructures built after June 6th 1944? What was their job? And why did they go so far into the sea? Well. The reason why these Harbours were built is to anchor big warships, loaded with vehicles, guns, troops, tanks, ammo, food, etc and bring them to land without losing a ship because it got stuck in the sand. Thats also the reason why these harbours where that big! To have deep wather for the boat’s because the sea when its low tide in normandy back away very far from the coast. It is almost unbelievable that almost every vehicle from the Allies in Western Europe, got on land in one of these two harbours. Can you imagine how thousands and thousands of vehicles, tanks, cannons drive past your home in a village that looked so unimportant to you ald became the harbour of the libaration of Western Europe?! To me it does not only sounds but aslo looked unbelievable when i first heared about it and stood there. If you go to Normandy these places are surely worth it to visit! Get the numbers: 45.000 workers made 147 Phoenix caissons. All roads on the sea were combined 15km long. A was not longer useable after a storm so it closed June 21st. B operated until October 31st. In total 220.000 man, 628.000 tons materials and 40.000 vehicles were shipped to Arromanche. That is insane! All of that in just 5 months. #ww2 #arromaches #viervillesaintlaurent #americanarmy #britisharmy #dday #june6th #harbour #normandy #ww2history #normandyuploads #dailyfinds #tank #tanks #ww2americanarmy
John Steele, the Sainte-Mère-Église paratrooper, June 6th, 1944. John Steele (November 29th, 1912 - May 16th, 1969) was a paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division, 505th Parachute Infantery Regiment, 2nd Battalion, who was dropped at 1 am, June 6th 1944. For his and the 1st battalion, things got wrong. The plan was to be dropped at the west side of the German occupied Sainte-Mère-Église. But instead of that, his and the 1st battalion got dropped right above the centre of the French village. At the moment the paratroopers were dropped, there was a fire in a house at the square of the church. All Germans were outside because of that and recieved the Paratroopers with constant gunfire. Lots of the 1st and 2nd battalion paratroopers died except of one remarkable person called J. Steele. His parachute got stuck at the corner of the church tower. There he hung for 2 hours and played for death. He saw how his friends got killed while falling with their parachutes. The Germans noticed after a few hours that he was hanging there and they captured him as a prisoner. But the same day he could escape miraculously. And joined the 3rd battalion, who were dropped where planned and liberated Sainte-Mère-Église. They captured 30 Germans as prisoners and killed 11. John Steele operated in until the end of the war in the 82nd Airborne and survived. Sadly, he died on throath cancer in 1969... He visisted the village very often after the war. In the creperie called Cauquigny in the central village. The interior of the restaurant is a beautiful trowback in time and a tribute to John Steele and his comrades who fought or died in and around Sainte-Mère-Église. In the church there is a tribute to not only johnsteele but the paratroopers too. Its a beautiful lead glass that represents the paratroopers who landed in Sainte-Mère-Église. Also the Airborne Museum next to the church is surely worth it to visit! A beautiful collection of planes, tanks, vehicles, costumes, guns... etc. Magnificent! John Steele got the Bronze Star and the Purple Hearth for his courage and his injuries. #saintemereeglise #82ndairborne #usarmyww2 #airborne #june6th #june6th1944 #normandy #overlord #ww2 #jsteele

Omaha was the bloodiest of the five beaches stormed on DDay, June 4th, 1944. Of the 32,000 men who stormed the beach that day, 4,700 would become casualties. Compared to Utah, the 21,000 men of the 4th infantry division that hit the beach, 197 would become casualties, much less than Omaha. This is actually mostly due to the fact that the landing craft on Utah drifted too far south and ended landing men on a much less defended side of the beach. If they had attacked their original target, casualties would have amounted to be much higher. The Utah landings were supported by paratrooper units, the US 82nd and 101st Airborne, around 14,000 of them. Of these 14,000 brace and highly trained men, 2,499 were killed, wounded, or went missing on that first night, morning, and day. So while the beach landing on Utah was much less contested compared with Omaha and the other beaches attacked by the British and Canadians, the sector as a whole was still immensely deadly. On Golf Beach, attacked by the British, there were 1,000-1,100 casualties (350 killed), on Juno there were around 965 casualties, and on Sword Beach there were 683 casualties out of 28,845 men and 223 tanks. The Normandy landings were not only fought by the 29th and 1st infantry divisions on Omaha Beach. Every single unit of every single beach or paratrooper landing played a paramount role in the success of the landing operation, known as Operation Neptune. If one beach failed to secure its beachhead, the status of the other beaches would be in a fragile situation. From the commanders, to the ship crews, to the drivers of the landing craft, to the infantry, to the paratroopers, to even the cameramen, the success of the operation was due to the efforts of all the men it included. — #dday #america #american #usa #us #usarmy #usairforce #army #airforce #marines #navy #military #boat #beach #1944 #june6th1944 #june61944 #june6th #june6 #history #wwii #worldwar2 #ww2 #storm #hitthedeck #hitthefloor #victory

Artifacts from our 29th Collection. Most all of these items are attributed to a Twenty-niner. Let’s Go!
Gotta love personal gear!
This wonderful and poignant relic was found outside of St Lo and bore witness to the greusome fighting for the key objective. The helmet still retains much of the 29th ID insginia and only remnants of the NCO Bar once painted on the rear. Many uniforms and helmets found throughout this fighting period were sterilized of rank and insignia, so the poor condition of the NCO Bar may prove that it was removed intentionally. The German/ French bottle of Perrier was also found in the same hole!
4th Infantry Division made Toggle Rope found in a barn behind Utah Beach. The rope’s wooden handle was replaced. A fantastic example of a rare piece of D-Day memorabilia that just do not show up often!
Purple Heart awarded to Private John F. Burcaw Jr., of Co. E, 2nd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. Private Burcaw was first reported as Missing in Action, then Killed in Action on 1 September 1944, near La Trinite, France. The 116th IR had been engaged in heavy fighting near La Trinite since 29 August 1944. The town was vital to the conquest of Brest (and as important as Hill 103), as it was situated just off the main road (N789) that connected Brest and the La Conquet peninsula. On 1 September the 2nd Battalion was south of the N789 and met by heavy German artillery - likely killing Private Burcaw in the barrage. For a six day period of fighting for La Trinite, that ended on 3 September 1944, the 116th sustained 469 total casulties. Private Burcaw is at rest in Plot H, Row 15, Grave 3 Brittany American Cemetery in Saint James, France.

29th Infantry Division Ike Unfortunately this jacket is unnamed; but the owner was certainly one of the many to transfer from the 69th ID into the 29th as the war came to a close in Europe.
We prefer our field gear to have just the right amount of that “been there” look. Of course, it helps if it’s named! Spot the gas impregnated gear?
1st Infantry Division M1 Helmet - Normandy This is one we used to have in our collection and is an incredible example of an M1 Helmet with an original 1st ID Insignia, original net, and NCO Bar. The shell has been repainted at least once, true to the Normandy campaign. Thick brush marks can be seen under the net. T4 or T5 rank was painted on the right side, only to be covered by the repaint. The only identifying marking is "Nick" scratched into the NCO Bar. Soap residue is thick on the inside. Original net and straps show heavy use. A true Normandy vet!
Happened to be in Normandy at the annual memorial of D-day.
