How we try to improve canter (and other movements) lives in one phrase: give the horse a reason to canter. But not just *any* reason... a *movement* purpose. A *functional* reason. . As obvious as that is, I spent far too much time struggling with movements and gaits because I did not give my horses an *authentic* reason to do them. I gave them *reasons*, but not MOVEMENT reasons. Both -R and +R suffer the same issues when improving movement: they give the horse an EXtrinsic motivator for a movement, but not a *movement system* purpose. A horse trying to seek relief from pressure will compensate, and perform mechanically. But so will a horse performing to earn a treat! The difference is that many +R trainers will not restrict the horse’s movement, and that IS a big movement benefit over force. But a horse mechanically attempting a canter-like movement to earn a treat is still not going to produce a self-organized more optimal canter. The best way we know to truly improve a movement (or, sometimes, to even begin to work on it) is to give the horse a meaningful MOVEMENT purpose for which canter (or more engagement, etc) IS the AUTOMATIC natural answer. . A lot of Liberty canter work is done with the horse in tight circles focused on the human, but the horse has no functional purpose for that canter... the horse is performing it because he believes it is what the human wants. . There’s plenty of science to support that the benefits of a movement purpose can be profound, in some cases showing instant gains in strength, speed, range of motion that usually require weeks or *months* to develop. But we get them *for free*, instantly, from the nervous system when it has a movement goal. Then *after* the horse has a chance to develop that movement, *then* we can begin work in more artificial contexts. . The part that takes patience and creativity is finding and constructing the “authentic” movement context, and being in the right place to reinforce them when they happen. Once the horse begins to *stabilize* in the movement so it is more robust and adaptable, *then* we can start doing more with it. . [update: practical discussion in comments on HOW to do this 🙂]

Too soon did the recent and oddly summer-like mood simmering in the air give way to a tired return to layered grey and intermittent lashings of piss rain. It was nice while it lasted, and the cratered dirt indeed managed to shrink and harden in the sun only to be washed into an unappetising jelly again that not even Trip would eat. And that is a heavy statement, as Trip eats rotten jump poles and thinks nothing of it. But even though I feel a strong urge to shrivel into a damp raisin whilst walking through one such downpour and realising that "windbreaker" doesn't necessarily have to mean "waterproof", most of this woe is somehow completely forgotten in the company of an adventurous equine. My sister and I brought the big horses down in pairs from the neighbours' place yesterday. Luca and Swiss were supercharged with the stormy energy whipping through the valley and took every opportunity to ignore the Please Slow Down signs on the side of the road and sprint from one grass patch to the next. When Luca slid gracefully into a dry ditch to eat the greenery sprouting there, I took the opportunity to ask him if I could climb on his back. Though his coat was damp and I was in PJ trousers, we enjoyed a very short ride during which Luca powerfully climbed out of the ditch and then halted at the top by my voice command as I didn't quite feel up to being a crouching and helpless passenger without reins along Luca's favourite sprinting track that loomed only metres away. So I dismounted and let the horses sprint some more before putting them in the field and retrieving the others. On the way down, even Suzie (energy saver extraordinaire) was rapt by the adventurous spirit (and the fact that Luca was hollering at him from afar like a tsunami siren) and trotted powerfully down the hill whilst I cheered him on and yelled for everyone in close vicinity to look, including the neighbour and the neighbour's goats. The goats looked. 2 days ago was the 6 year anniversary of one of the most stupid things I've ever done, and simultaneously one of the best. Funny that, aye. To this day I'm still rather unsure of what was going through my parents' minds when they agreed to let me (a tiny bleached frog with greasy hair) adopt a young beast with bald patches whose rug I could barely put on by myself whilst standing on utmost tiptoes. I might have to ask them because no plausible answers spring to mind. One thing I can tell you for certain however is that this fella here is a once in a lifetime horse and through uncountable adventures (such as taking him to the beach) and misadventures (such as falling off and being trampled whilst taking him to the beach) we've grown to be each other's mind readers and partners in not-crime and I honestly cannot say what things would be like if I hadn't met him that day, standing in a muddy field and giving me the side-eye. Twenty one dollars for the lifetime privilege of being both flamekeeper and enthusiastic sidekick to the most intelligent, opinionated, and hilarious horse I've ever met... Here's to another year with Luca, and many more I'd hope. Thanks for not kicking me in the head even when I deserved it. I wish I had that sort of self-control. Princess 👑 shetland pony, estimated 20 something, had multiple cases of laminitis, been neglected for years. Goodnight #Repost @before5am ・・・ You guys have heard me say it before, but sometimes the most productive thing you can do, is to do nothing. ~ You've got to give your mind a chance to rest and relax. Most of you are over thinking and over working your mind and that leads to burn out, a lack of performance and in some cases depression and illness. ~ Now, I know you've got a hectic schedule and you've got to manage your career, business, family, social life and finances along with everything else. ~ I also know, you're hustling and grinding to make your dreams come true and you are pushing yourself every day to perform at your highest level. ~ But, I'm asking you to give yourself, especially your mind a chance to switch off from time to time and allow yourself to just be and allow things to just be... for a moment, not forever. ~ One of the great keys to peak performance that I teach many of my coaching clients is to give yourself 1 - 2 hours a day at the very least to disconnect. ~ Take up a new hobby, go for a walk in nature, meditate and enjoy just pottering around your back yard. You've got to give your mind time to relax, so you can be more focused and perform at a higher level when you actually need to. ~ The other great tip I recommend, is to work in small blocks of time. You won't be very productive after 2 or 3 hours of intense focus and work. So you have to make it part of your lifestyle and schedule to give yourself a break. ~ If you really want to take things to the next level and be more focused and achieve more, then you have to learn the art of resting your mind and allowing yourself to just be. ~ If you make it part of your lifestyle to unwind, then you will find you won't burn out or need long holidays or need to run away from your life. ~ Resting your mind, is as important as resting your body after a big work out. ~ So give your mind a chance to rest, that may mean you have to hide your phone from yourself and stop checking your emails and message and go sit on the beach for a while and just watch the waves roll in. ~ One of the reasons I can work every day and rarely need holidays is because, I make sure I look after myself throughout the day
How do we feel about mistakes? When I show “reality” and “behind the scenes” video, people often appreciate that we show “the mistakes.” After all, “everyone makes mistakes.” But my relationship to the very idea of “mistakes” has changed. I no longer have the concept of what a “mistake” is when it comes to the horses. There is only “what they do.” . A mistake implies that they did something wrong. Incorrect. Long ago, in the days I was focused on “obedience” and perfect responses, a “mistake” was if the horse did anything EXCEPT the One Right Answer I was asking for. I cue, horse responds, there is only one correct response. But later I moved to a different path, where the relationship was no longer so one-sided. But still I had the notion of *movement* mistakes. That there was only one “correct” form of movement. One “right” way to biomechanically execute a movement. And that idea has now fallen away in the face of modern movement science. There are no “wrong” or “incorrect” movements, only movement the horse *makes* in response to a movement problem. His answer... his solution IS his best answer given what his inputs are and what his nervous system is telling him. The “incorrect” movements are those the horse is forced to perform and repeat without the ability to self-organize. Those movements are certain to increase strain on the horse’s tissues and lead to compensations. It is forced movements *repeated* that so dramatically increase the injury rate in sport horses. . If my horse moves under a rider in a way that compromises her spine— extension “kinks”, hollowing, etc.,— these are not mistakes or “incorrect” or “wrong” movements by the horse. They are mistakes by the *human* who asked the horse for what the horse is not competent to do. The mistake is *mine*, not my horse’s. I did not give her movement system a meaningful movement goal... a purpose for which a more optimal solution is a natural, authentic response. . The horse does not make “mistakes.” The horse always acts on the data she has, and what her nervous system feels is in her best interest. If we view this as “mistakes”, we disrespect nature. We want nature as an ally.

“Great question!” is so different than “well said!” One it seems you get simply for saying something with which someone agrees…the other might mean you have introduced someone to a thought they had never before experienced. . . . Free thinking is an awesome thing because we generally cannot MAKE anyone feel anything. Except pain…pain & discomfort are mostly easy to access & do not require too much skill. Pain/discomfort are the actual business model of schoolyard pests. . . . When we can bring someone a thought they had never possessed, THAT is a truly unique feeling.
It is a curious thing that PEOPLE do not have a monopoly on people skills. I would have to say that doggos are probably the peoples’ champs. Humans are just not that into humanity. You can read a book to learn that some people want you to bring them gifts. A book may tell you other folks need affirming and kind words or that an act of service appeals to certain people. . . . There is something about when you put into play the things that you have found through your experiences that just FEELS different than when you try and echo something off of a rubric or whatever. Talk is cheap and sincerity is priceless…

Some days ago I told you about my lovely Lino and his coughing problems. It was actually more about my way of looking at him. I always saw the „poor coughing pony“ that lost almost all his wild power due to that. I was wrong. Not slightly but super wrong. Thank you Lino for telling me that in your very special way 💛 . We should never underestimate someone else. They might believe it for a while or even longer. That is what kills energy and happiness. Some days you may think of saying “no one cares”. The positive view of that is that if no one cares, then no one is stopping you. The universe is actually indifferent on whether or not you become a millionaire or if your dreams come true or if the light of all your burned bridges illuminates your path from here on out. Time is no respecter of persons and what matters is your effort towards your goals as long as you do it in YOUR time. Time is all we have.

Being passionate about PEOPLE is hard. That is likely true of any passion... The thing is, with people...you don't always LIKE people. That is not really the focus though. Being a bit more authentic & even sharing vulnerability could help. So you have to get over yourself & rely on your strength to get you through if circumstances put you at a disadvantage for being genuine. Just be real with people. Easier said than done.
If you are someone who thinks a lot about things you may forget that the world does not begin or end at your doorstep. The people in your life are not just YOUR people. They are just people who have their own issues & their own strengths. Appreciate them for who they are, not who you would have them be. Save yourself a headache.
Suzie has met the mat three times. The first time was last summer. He pawed at it a few times before lapsing into his frustration dance and threatening to turn me into roadkill. The second time was early autumn, where he sniffed it occasionally, got frustrated, and proceeded to eat the fence. Yesterday was the third time, and Suzie finally triumphed over his own mental blocks. Yee-bloody-haw! I put the mat in the middle of the paddock, along with hay. After most of the hay was consumed, Luca and Swiss had a bit of fun with the mat before going off to watch the house construction on the field next door and give unsolicited architecture advice. It's a good thing they don't speak English as I highly doubt they'd know much about the topic (though what Luca did with the mat in the 4th picture does warrant for some speculation). Anyhow, once the mat sat alone, Suzie meandered over to have a look. I clicked for interest (sniffing, pawing) to assure Suzie that he's doing great sweetie and on the road to even better things, and added some crunches in between to show him an alternative if he got confused but still wanted to earn a treat or show me something that isn't manic leg flinging thanks. And indeed- with this confidence Suzie began to interact more, offering a crunch when he didn't know what I was suggesting when I planted myself on the mat to demonstrate, and then finally going "oh I SEE" and fully stepping on the mat. That got him the jackpot- a handful of treats- and enough praise for three horses. Of course this rounded up the attention of the Mud Beast, who promptly felt the need to remind us how well HE could stomp across that mat. However once the mat was free again, Suzie did indeed return to step on it once more, calmly and at his own leisurely pace without his mind constantly screaming "EMOtionAL THRESHOLD LEVEL: kill everything". I am proud of the orange horse. He hasn't given up on me, or himself for that matter, though he was close. This is huge progress for him. Look at his happy horseface. For myself, personally a lot of the time it’s my own mental state that holds me back. My body is usually ready to go, and always craving more! Even on those days where my body is right; no soreness, no injuries, no illness, etc... my mind has to be on track! I need the motivation to actually get myself to the gym, and not only that, once I’m there I need to push myself to my full potential. I can’t tell you how many times my mind has created a road block for me. I can honestly tell you that every time that’s happened, I’ve wound up feeling guilty, mad at myself, defeated even. So how do you change that? How do you get your mind where it needs to be to succeed in your journey? •• •• You train your mind. As human beings we are not designed to do things that are uncomfortable. Our brains are wired to protect us from that, and in order to truly change you’re going to have to do the uncomfortable things. This is where intrinsic motivation comes in. This is performing an action because you enjoy the activity itself. So, even though your activity (or in this case, workout) is uncomfortable, you can pick ones that you enjoy doing. Right here you’re tricking your mind into ignoring the discomfort, because you’re enjoying yourself. On the contrary, extrinsic motivation is done for the sake of some external outcome. I you’re lucky enough to have an extrinsic mind where your motivation comes simply from knowing the end result will be beneficial then that’s fabulous and you’re very lucky! Some of us need a little extra help though. •• •• I hope this was insightful an educating, but even more so, I hope you’ll take the advice. And always remember this, if it doesn’t work for you, it’s still a learning experience, and that’s one step forward. You have to learn what doesn’t work, before you realize what does. I hope that it will hope though, and I hope that in doing the workouts you enjoy as much as possible, instead of forcing yourself into the ones you hate, you’ll find yourself more motivated, and wind up finding your positive mindset. If you’re able to find that, you will start seeing the reward that is also known as RĘŚÜŁTŠ 🌞

“On-the-go” Breakfast Muffins with spinach, bacon and egg whites🥧👩🏻🍳 • Struggling to get or prioritize your breakfast? These spinach and egg-white muffins are at your rescue😍 • These muffins (yes, some of them got a bit too much 😂) are perfect every day and for the busy “on-the-go” days. They require few ingredients, are easy to make, full of useful nutrition and have amazing taste. 🌱🥚🥓 Don’t like bacon - leave it out and/or replace😉 • Personally, I can’t function without breakfast and it significantly impacts my energy level throughout the day if I don’t have a filling breakfast. Still, the biggest “loose” is that if I skip breakfast I’ll almost certainly over-consume on calories the rest of the day !😝 • Small reminder🌟 If you’re skipping breakfast because you’ve been told that training on an empty stomach is the most effective for fat-loss - please STOP it’s a myth! ALL you have to focus on to get a fat-loss (basically) is to eat fewer calories that you burn during a day (or over a period of time). If you are in a calorie deficit you will loose weight —> THAT IS ALL !!! I’m NOT saying it’s easy but the EVIDENCE is conclusive !👌🏻 • Muffin recipe📔 This recipe gives around 10 muffins with each muffin at 60 calories. I will use it as breakfast for two days (5 muffins for each breakfast with some extra vegs)! • Ingredients: ~ 500 g frozen spinach ~ 400 g egg whites ~ 250 g cottage cheese (low fat) ~ 80 g turkey bacon • How to do it: 1. Microwave the frozen spinach and make sure it’s not watery. 2. Mix egg whites, cottage cheese, bacon and spinach in a bowl and put it in muffin forms. 3. Bake muffins in the oven at 200 degrees for 35 min. • Small habits - big changes ! 💥 It’s all about what YOU want and your priorities - don’t let anyone tell you what you should do. INTERNAL drive and motivation will keep you going and enable lasting change - not external influences ! ❤️
My miracle horse ❤️. No matter how many years since his recovery, I will never stop being grateful and amazed by his joy in moving. None of this is easy for him, yet his love of playful showing off now makes up for it. But I never forget when even asking for a trot would be met with anger, frustration, a battle I could not win. . Last night he plays with @birta.san (Carrie) (sorry for crappy phone video) in the pasture, and they both got a workout 🏃🏼♀️😅. Draumur shows his tolt, trot, “fancier trot”, canter, and agility change-of-direction. Where he once would threaten to pin his ears and charge at you or kick if you asked for more than a walk, today he says, “bring it!” Do they have a “special bond”? No. This is maybe the fifth time she has ever done something with Draumur. But they share a common attitude of effortful play... an intrinsic love of moving in nature (not obvious in the video, but the terrain here was quite challenging), combined with a fun “game”. Yes, treats are involved, but this was the horse that showed me the path to intrinsic motivation, as treats alone were not enough to overcome his severe physical and emotional struggles. He had to reconnect with the young horse he had long forgotten. Today he is simply happy to be a horse, happy to have a powerful and agile body. He will never have the best conformation. He will never have the upright, naturally collectible ability of a Spanish horse. He will forever be a five-gaiter with virtually no natural suspension. But he now shows off for humans, and loves the opportunity. This took many years for this horse to get here. Not years of “hard work” from me doing things “correctly”, but years of seeking ways to restore his love for movement. The rest was simply a little fitness. . Joy of movement... being inspired and motivated TO move, and being inspired and motivated BY movement... that was my ultimate goal. Watching him now, and with so little “work” in the last year, it is clear he has tapped back into being a horse. That is enough. We need motivation. And anyone who tells you otherwise, or that something like ‘discipline’ is the answer, is lying. . Motivation is the spark that gets you excited. . It’s the initial push down the slide that spurs you into action and is something you can turn to when times get tough. . The thrilling nature of setting yourself a new goal, or rekindling that initial feeling six months into your fat loss journey, is when ‘motivation’ – the stimulus to act – is at its peak. . Most people will claim intrinsic motivation sucks and you just require ‘extrinsic motivation’, or relying on extrinsic motivation sucks and you just need ‘intrinsic motivation’. . The answer is neither; you need both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation at certain points in your journey to keep you taking the necessary steps closer to your end goal. . Some people require more extrinsic motivation, whilst others require more intrinsic motivation. . Similarly, on some days we’ll necessitate more extrinsic motivation, while on other days we’ll necessitate more intrinsic motivation. . The trick is to unearth what works best for you, and how to ignite those feelings.
Sandra and I have finally met the herd of @icy.empowered in real life and let me tell you - they are exactly like Katja had described them 😂🙈 Alf, the professor 🧐 fifill the little baby lion who is very cautious 🦁 and Emil the over-confident crocodile 🐊 . So here is a little sneak peek into my interaction with alfi (if you haven't seen the post by @icy.empowered already 😅). . I've talked with Katja about it and I couldn't help but compare Alf with ský. While ský would flip over backwards, do a handstand and clap with his hind hooves for me (or anyone else I guess 😜), Alf only does things he has thought about and is 100% convinced of 🧐 he didn't feel my playful vibe and went straight to someone else. I then could compromise with him on doing some very established pantherwalk in exchange for some scratches 😊 . On the one hand it's great that ský is so super motivated and I love playing with him, our energy just flows together, but on the other hand I'm very impressed by alfi's self-confidence and pursuit of movement for himself - he is definetly on the path for intrinsic motivation 😊 . #pony #intrinzenstudents #álfur #ský #universityofintrinsichorsestuff #motivation #intrinsicmotivation #movement #play
We don’t need to educate our children, we just need to trust them... While I was busy cooking dinner tonight Amaiya decided to hop on the computer and found a YouTube clip of people doing magic and using illusions. Somehow this lead to her finding a clip of a woman drawing 3D shapes, and within 20 minutes of watching the clip Amaiya had taught herself the basics of drawing a 3D shape, she’d learnt how to shade and roughly where she needed to draw the shadows in too. When she came out to show me I was absolutely blown away! Amaiya was so proud of herself and spent a further half hour after dinner drawing more shapes while FaceTiming with her dad, who was as equally blown away by it as I was! It is moments like this that I know unschooling is the right choice for us. I just wish everybody knew how capable children really are, especially if they are given the time and space to grow and learn at their own pace and following their own interests. #unschooling #naturallearning #selfdirectedlearning #trustthechildren #intrinsicmotivation
