Yesterday I got to go birding at Hosmer Grove just below 7000ft in the cloud belt of @haleakalanps on Maui. Till then I hadn’t seen a single native Hawaiian bird, except for the Pacific Golden-Plover which is a migratory species. Due to a variety of often overlapping reasons, including losing habitat, invasive predators, and mosquito-borne diseases, bird populations on these islands are rapidly declining. Organizations like the @americanbirdconservancy are actively working to protect remaining critical habitat for native species, like this perfectly posed Hawaii ‘Amakihi. Many thanks to James Petruzzi for taking me around and showing me these incredible birds!
