You know how as adults we LEAN a bit or sometimes even KNEEL down to be at a child’s eye level so we can better understand what they’re trying to tell us? Or when we are having an amazing conversation with another adult and make a conscious effort to be actively listening when the other person is speaking, get closer, ask questions, nod our heads, and be present? It got me thinking...how often do we do this with ourselves? IN THE INTEREST OF TRANSPARENCY: If someone had asked me “Are you ok?” on Tuesday the answer would of been a resounding ‘no’. I’d been doing what I do best; burning the candle at both ends. So I stopped, I took a breath and I asked myself what was most important. . I altered my schedule so I had some extra time and I took that space to catch up on my sleep and non work related things I’d been neglecting. I have eaten cake, drank tea, tidied, cleaned, cooked, walked the pug and yoga-d my way back into a safer headspace. . So whilst I apologise for the delay in replying to emails and enquiries it was a necessary step in my own well being. . It’s important to check on our friends and loved ones but equally as important is asking OURSELVES “are you ok?” It’s all about the self love. Every two hours, a man in the UK takes his own life - that's 84 every week. In fact, suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. This staggering statistic, coupled with recent personal experiences, has driven me to organise a weekend in the studio, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 April, 9am-9pm, dedicated to raising funds and more importantly awareness, of this and other mental health issues that surround us daily. Unfortunately, many men feel unable to communicate their feelings in no small part due to the stigma attached to male mental health, perpetuated by a patriarchal society. Our objective is to shatter this taboo and convince anyone suffering that they are not alone, support is out there and recovery is possible. I’d like to also emphasise that whilst this event appears to be mainly focused upon men’s mental health, EVERYONE is welcome. Mental illness is not picky. It affects us all. Whether you'd like to contribute, share your experiences, learn more about where you or a friend/loved one can get support, all are welcome. There will be plenty of friendly faces, tea and coffee on tap and of course; loads of cake! I will also be raising funds for CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) by offering small, pre drawn tattoo designs relating to finding strength in the battle against mental health issues. Obviously it's 18+ only for the tattoos, without exception (ID checks will be in place). The full range of designs will be available in the coming weeks and they will be done on a no appointment needed basis, as per usual on our charity days! Just come along! Numerous courageous people have already stepped forward and shared their stories and experiences. With their blessing they will anonymously be posted around the studio for people to read, reflect upon, relate to or be positively inspired by. Like me, I know many of you have been personally directly and indirectly affected by the subject of mental health and suicide over the past few years. Even if you're unable to attend or contribute, know that there are people and organisations out there who are here for you. Never be afraid to reach out, recovery is always possible ❤️❤️❤️

Never been much for playing licks. Even in the beginning I listened to a slew of guitarists and only felt the urge to mimic as opposed to playing the exact notes. - I did transcribe quite a bit about 10 yrs ago. I also write out ideas when working on something that stumps me. However, when I’m performing I spend 90-95% speaking with my instrument, not thinking about what to play. A CONVERSATION NEEDS TO HAPPEN 📢📣📢 Mental health should not be an issue talked about on one specially reserved day of the year. Mental illness and suicide should be a conversation had every day of the year. 📢📢📢 The biggest killer of men under the age of 49 in the UK is suicide. More than any other cause of death. 75% of all UK suicides are male. Let’s repeat that...SUICIDE IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN MEN UNDER 49. 75% OF ALL UK SUICIDES ARE MALE. 📢📢📢 This isn’t an issue that’s far removed from our lives. It’s not something we can dismiss as easily as global warming or litter. It is not out of sight out of mind. This is an issue that affects us all because I can guarantee that we are either affected ourselves or we all know someone who is affected my mental illness. If you don’t? Then you’re not asking the right questions or paying attention to the people around you. 📢📢📢 START A CONVERSATION. Feeling like you can’t cope? Talk to someone. Wishing you could go to sleep and never wake up? Talk to someone. Know someone who seems withdrawn? Quieter than normal? Going through a rough time? TALK TO THEM. Ask them how they are and if they give you a stock ‘I’m fine’ answer...ASK AGAIN. 📢📢📢 BEING SILENT ISN’T BEING STRONG. It is NOT ‘weak’ to discuss emotions. It is NOT ‘weak’ to cry. It is NOT ‘weak’ to have panic attacks. It is NOT ‘weak’ to consider taking your own life. It takes fucking guts to admit these things and it takes fucking guts to get help. If you know someone you think needs help and they can’t do it alone? Then do it with them. Reach out, hold their hand and tell them they’re not alone. 📢📢📢 No one should feel like their only option is death. Let’s start talking so people stop hurting. And most importantly...so people stop dying. 💔💔💔
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: For most; the phrase “TIME is a healer’ is probably relatable. But here’s the thing.... I have suffered with depression and anxiety nearly as far back as I can remember. In Oct ‘15 I was hospitalised via the NHS following a mental breakdown. After 2 weeks in a private mental health unit, an extended period of time off of work and frequent (non NHS) therapy sessions over the next 6+ months; I got ‘back on track’. Skip to the later part of 2016 and I knew my mental health was steadily declining. In Jan ‘17 I went to the doctors and asked for help. I was given medication, referred for further assessment and it was then just a case of waiting. Things continued to worsen with increasing momentum. In March ‘17 I was hospitalised after attempting to take my own life. I stayed in NDDH and was discharged at the end of April. On the week of my discharge I had 1 phone call with the CRISIS team. Since then I’ve had 1-2 appointments per month with my care co-ordinator. I have been referred for ‘pre-therapy’. I am still on the waiting list for ‘therapy’. But the key thing here - I’m still waiting. I am not NHS bashing by any means; they do an amazing job with what they have. My GP, the NDDH psych department and the NHS staff I’ve met so far have done an amazing job; with what they had. But, in my opinion, the key to any mental health issue is TIMING. When you go to the doctor and tell them you’re suicidal, you do not have ‘TIME’ for waiting lists. You do not have ‘TIME’ for referrals. You do not have ‘TIME’ for medications that might or might not work. You just don’t have TIME. No. There is no ‘quick’ fix. But the system in place isn’t even a ‘reasonably timed’ fix. It’s a ‘9 month waiting list before you even get assessed for any kind of fix’ fix. And in that time, our mental health declines and the consequences develop in seriousness with the recovery time extending. My main point is that time may be a healer for some, but for others, it’s a killer. It’s TIME for us ALL to speak up - until the right people listen, things start to change and we consequently have less time waiting and MORE TIME LIVING 🖤❤️
