In-situ cross-section of a Moqui marble within it's host rock of Navajo Sandstone. Note the cute little one near the lower left norner as well. True Moqui marbles are odd concretions in that rather than growing outward from a central nucleus, they grow as a shell of precipitate at the margins of a mineral-saturated "wet spot" as the sandstone dried out. A whole, intact moqui marble would look like an iron spheroid. As far as anybody knows moqui marbles were named by Mormon settlers, whose children would use them as toys. They named them after a mythical, diminuative race of native Americans. These settlers also commonly encountered the abandoned stone graneries of Anasazi and Fremont-age peoples. These graneries are typically made of stacked rocks moartered with adobe. They were usually built in nooks and overhange in cliffs high above the canyon floors. Large, flat stones would be moartered over small doorways to keep vermin from attacking the food. Pioneers, puzzled by what looked like small dwellings with small doors, invented tales of a race of small ancient indians and called them "Moqui". I've never heard any explaination as to why that particular word was used. These graneries were very effective food storage. When I was a young man, hiking very long distances all over the Colorado Plateau country, I often stumbled upon these graneries, many of which were still filled with tiny ancient corncobs. Just about all of them that I've visited within the last decade or two have been plundered and are now empty. This sort of thing highlights the need to protect the region. This is our heritage and birthright as Americans and citizens of the world. Najbolja mjesta na putovanju su ona koja nadjete sasvim slucajno. Skrenuli smo s glavnog puta na zemljani put u nigdje. Pratili smo cestu koja ja u dosta losem stanju, a svaki zavoj nam je oduzimao dah. Opet priroda rastura, a ono najbolje, nigdje niti jednog turista, ovo mjesto kao da je zaboravljeno. Rijec je o Grand Staircase Escalante i cesta prema gradu duhova Paria. Grad je doslovno grad duhova jer nema ama bas nicega osim table za sjecanja. Grad je napusten pocetkom 20 st. zbog cestih poplava, a kasnije se koristio za snimanje raznih filmova, prije par godina se moglo prosetati kroz kulise no nasao se neki pametnjakovic i sve je zapalio. Got a great visitor to the Leppold farm yesterday, my former star student Eric Diehl who I taught earth science to about 18 years ago. Since high school he has become a very successful and respected artist and has been chosen to go on a great adventure this fall that is the perfect marriage of science, culture and art. Eric will be camping and colluding with 9 other artists investigating mining operations on the Colorado Plateau as well as tracing the history of the Anasazi. His project is inspired by the environmental concerns of the Ute and Dine (Navajo) people and will incorporate the geology of the Grand Staircase Region into his suburban paintings and etchings. Since Earth Science class was almost two decades ago he stopped by for a refresher course on the rich geologic history of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Plateau, Basin and Range, and Grand Canyon areas. The rock layers and sediments of that region should make for some great pigments for his paintings! Of which one of his original works proudly hangs in my home. Signal Fire Arts of Portland Oregon is the environmental arts organization leading the trip, so give him a follow and live vicariously through his Instagram posts. I am looking forward to seeing how this experience influences his future artwork. And I must admit, being a public school teacher is often a thankless job, but when you have students like Eric keep in touch with you over the years, it reminds me that I might have it pretty good. Moqui marbles within a surface pavement of fragments. Moqui marbles are formed as Iron-bearing fluids which saturate a porous rock layer dessicate. Once these fluids reach saturation or even supersaturation, they will precipitate their load. If the remaining fluid is in a spherical configuration, the concretion which forms will also be spherical. Most concretions crow outward. Moqui marbles are interesting in that they grow as a shell and are often cored by unaltered sandstone. They are a form of what geologists refer to as Liesegang banding. When I first visited this spot as a teenager, the surface was an unbroken pavement of marbles. Today is a sparse pavement of fragments and there were no more that a couple of dozen spheres to be seen. Thankfully, collection is prohibited there because of the area's protected status but very much of the region has recently lost that status.
