Perfection-⠀ “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien” writes Voltaire. In other words: Perfection is the enemy of good.⠀ ⠀ For many years, I took pride in my perfectionism. I can be OCD about my environment, small tasks, big tasks - everything. And when it comes to creating art, this can keep me from just making stuff and putting it out there. I become so occupied with making sure the details are perfect, that I deprive myself of the joy in just creating.⠀ ⠀ There is something called the Pareto principle which is similar to “the golden mean.” The Pareto principle states that 80% of output comes from 20% of input. In creativity, this can mean that it takes 20% of time to finish 80% of a task and 80% of time to finish the last 20% of a task. We can spend forever increasing our efforts towards perfectionism, only to result in diminishing returns. In other words, perfectionism is not only impractical, it becomes more difficult to achieve the harder you try for it.⠀ ⠀ So I’ve decided, in my creative work, that done is better than good, and good is better than perfect. I just found out our 51-Hour Film Challenge short film EDGE OF INTERNMENT was selected by the Producer’s Guild Of America to win 3rd Prize for the Make Your Mark Weekend Shorts Competition! Couldn’t have done it without my partner @allyiseman who produced it with me and acted in our impromptu musical, @jameskyson , and was composed in 5 hours by @georgeshawmusic and written by @colequirk , @samre_an and @ryansranting, our DP @massitrevis and editor @lindadifranco! “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” -Joseph Campbell. For me, this year has been one of taking stock and figuring out what’s next. As I prepared to forge ahead what I didn’t realize was how much time I was going to spend looking back: healing persistent wounds, releasing old habits and grievances, reconnecting with my essential self. I’ve been inspired in recent weeks to re-read journals from earlier in my life and what’s interesting to see is that even with growth, there is so much at the core that remains the same. In many ways, I’m struggling with the same things that I was back in 2010, 2006, 1998. I can’t tell if it’s reassuring or depressing to read an entry from 7 or 8 years ago where I’m fretting over the same dumb problem I’m grappling with this very week. Will I ever push past these limitations, I wonder? But on the flip side, the words and ideas and opportunities that inspired me then still do the same today, which is why this quote from Joseph Campbell floated up for me. These words were a catalyst in the last phase of my creative journey, when I woke up from a long, numbing slumber and realized I had to chase my passion or risk missing out on real fulfillment. And somehow, with all that has transformed in my life, I am again contemplating questions about passion and fulfillment and how I spend my time and what I want to create and I find comfort and guidance in that same quote. Today we celebrate Film Fatales member Ciara Lacy is a native Hawaiian filmmaker whose interest lies in crafting films that use strong characters and investigative journalism to challenge the creative and political status quo. She has produced documentary content for film and television, managed independent features, as well as coordinated product placement and clearances for various platforms. Her work has shown in theaters and has aired on PBS, ABC, TLC, Discovery, Bravo and A&E. She has also benefited from fellowships with Firelight Media's Documentary Lab, the Sundance Institute and Time Warner Foundation, the Sundance Institute’s NativeLab, Tribeca All Access, the Princess Grace Foundation, and IFP. Her latest film WE ARE STILL HERE! shows the personal journey of a remote Native Alaskan village and its people, whose stories of struggle and resilience show a community fighting for its future. On September 5, 2015 stuntwoman Olivia @olivia_stunts Jackson was severely injured on the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter while doubling for actress Milla Jovovich. Jackson was instructed to ride her motorcycle toward an oncoming camera vehicle to capture a shot for the film. Due to human error, the vehicle’s crane that held the camera was not lifted in time, resulting in a head on collision and leaving Jackson with over 20 serious injuries including a paralyzed left arm, five nerve roots ripped from her spinal cord, a severed artery in her neck, severe brain bleeding and swelling, a degloved left-hand, and multiple shattered bones. Jackson was put in a 17-day medically-induced coma to undergo back-to-back reconstructive surgeries and would eventually require amputation of her left arm. Akilah was one of our very first followers on Twitter! She even brought her original copy of “Coffee Will Make You Black” to share with Writer/Director Deborah Riley Draper! How amazingly cool is that?? Akilah’s profile (LinkedIn): Akilah lived and breathed politics for seven years as a lawyer-lobbyist at a swanky firm on Washington, D.C.'s infamous "K Street" where she represented companies like Starbucks and Delta Airlines. She was living someone’s dream, but it wasn’t her own, and you can only fake the funk for so long before you get going-through-the-motions sickness. So on April Fools’ Day 2013, a year shy of making partner at her firm, Akilah packed up and moved cross-country to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a TV writer. It's been such a joy teaching @aboutthework’s On Camera Acting classes over the past few weeks! The classroom and workshop setting is such a valuable, necessary part of the work for actors. It allows actors the opportunity to play and explore themselves within the craft, to expand their awareness (this is KEY!) and comfort zones to feel more confident and in command when the audition or "action!" actually comes. In the film industry itself, actors don’t have control over much (obviously excluding the 1% A-listers, for the most part), but that is no excuse to not maintain power, integrity, and control over *actually* the most important thing, their performance, their vessel, their ability to make or break a scene, a moment, an entire project, a memory, a transformation, a legacy. Directors, teachers, and coaches can make them better, yes, and it’s certainly amazing what directors and editors can do in the editing room, but it is ultimately up to them what they bring to the table to work with. It's been so inspiring to work with dedicated actors, to see how much they've grown even in just the past few weeks. Thank you to owner @murisaharba for this opportunity!
