Most of us might pop a few Advil in response to an everyday nagging pain without much thought. And why not? These are over-the-counter (OTC) medications after all, so what could be the harm? . NSAIDS (aka Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) are a class of over-the-counter painkiller. Examples of NSAIDS include Ibuprofen (like Advil), Naproxen, and Aspirin. . Although NSAIDS are very effective in managing a nagging pain, there are a number of consequences these can have on your gut health. . Now, I'm not saying you should NEVER take an NSAID. Cucumber, mint, and lime infused water got me like 💃🏻 into the weekend. This is fancy hotel status right here! It’s hard to beat ice cold 💧 + all the bright green things 🥒, especially when it’s a 90+ degree sauna outside (Texas, I’m looking at you). . Staying hydrated can be such a challenge. It’s hot, you’re on errand no. 5, sweating like crazy, and halfway through your 3rd cup of coffee. Meanwhile your body’s like ☠️🌵👀. Happens to the best of us! (ie, me 🤦🏻♀️). . Adequate fluid intake is one of the most commonly overlooked good gut health habits. Mostly because it’s hard! And we all forget about it. . My goal this week has been to boost my water intake. 💩Does your gut agree with fibre? For many people with IBS, the answer is simply ‘no!’ . 😞They find that high fibre meals, like salads, bloat them and make them feel fatigued. This is super frustrating as a ‘healthy’ meal should make you feel fab right? . 🧐So what to do? Live off low fibre foods and avoid IBS symptoms or just ‘put up with it?’ . 🙋♀️Well why don’t I give you a solution for getting fibre back into your diet without ‘putting up’ with symptoms? . 👩When you increase your fibre intake, going for a huge portion all at once is not the one guys - you will get symptoms! Hell, even people without IBS sometimes getting bloated after huge fibre intakes. . 🤓So, how to do it? Well, firstly get an idea of what you are having on an average day - track your intake of fibre using Myfitness pal. Don’t change anything over this time, just track it. . 🤓Then, make a realistic goal to increase your fibre slowly - say 2-3g / day. This way you can increase your fibre to your own ‘tolerance’ level. 30g a day is what the general population is advised to have, but just see how you get on as this is a ‘general’ target. . 🍇🥕🥒🍅🍌Foods to opt for are carrots, peppers, golden linseed, oats, berries, green bananas, tomatoes and lettuce - these are generally all high fibre foods BUT low FODMAP, therefore least likely to cause you issues. . 👉What I find with my clients also is that they are able to tolerate more and more fibre as they tackle their IBS. After a week of feeling 💀☠️ and trying various natural remedies, I still felt like 💀☠️. My go-tos of ginger and peppermint didn't make the slightest difference 😭. Everyone poops. Right? Nope, not exactly. . Yep, I'm going to go here. To be honest, I don't really want to, but SO MANY of you reach out to me about this issue and I want to let you know I was there too! . My issues began in college and over time, got worse and worse. I ate prunes every day, increased my water intake, attempted to eat more veggies, took OTC medicine, drank more coffee…just about everything in search of relief. . Finally everything above combined with this orange cylinder finally started to “help” my issue. And when I say I had issues—I’m talking 1-2 weeks of pain, discomfort and nausea. . The stress of it all didn’t help either. I was young, active and hated that I had to do/take so many things to keep me regular. When I became pregnant, it happened again, but this time I was over halfway through my pregnancy and the pain I experienced led the OB on call to assume I was in preterm labor. . Since I was out of state and definitely not ready to have the baby I for sure panicked, but I had felt this feeling before. It was a digestive issue…not time for Olivia to enter the world. . Not even knowing the shake that came with my new workout program would help me in this department after a couple weeks drinking it on my way to work each day—I started to experience a change! . I can tell you all the ways my chocolate peanut butter, blueberry muffin, peanut butter cookie (the list goes on as I try new recipes) superfoods shake has and continues to help me, but one of the BEST parts is it has allowed me to not only go to the bathroom regularly (even through pregnancy), but I NO LONGER have to drink this orange drink, eat prunes 3x a day and take laxatives. For that I am thankful! . . . Oh and this orange cylinder—it became a reminder of how I no longer have this issue….it has been expired, but sitting in my pantry. No new blog post this week, because life 🤷🏼♀️ But I did want to share again one of the first posts I wrote, because it’s a big one! . SIBO was something I’d never heard of, until it was my diagnosis. But now that I look back on it, my gut and lifestyle were heading straight for one giant SIBO shaped crash landing. . So, I wrote down a few of the things that I know were contributing factors in me developing SIBO, in the hopes that you might be able to avoid them! . I don’t want the topics in this post to be another stressor or something else to worry about - just things that can be small lifestyle changes now for better gut health in the future. . And even if you do have the “perfect diet” and low stress lifestyle, you still might develop SIBO or some other health issue. Some things are just out of our control. . Lentil and Mushroom Shepherd's Pie (Vegan) Shepherd's Pie is a British dish originating from the sheep country in Scotland and northern England. It was usually made as a means of using leftover roasted meat (such as beef, lamb or mutton). This meat pie is typically cooked in a gravy with onions and other vegetables, such as peas, celery or carrots.
