Smoky scrambling. Got to go on a couple great adventures with @justindong_ while he was still around, excited for him to take even more amazing pictures of me next summer! Thanks for the snap Justin!
Finding the time to get up into the hills after work always pays off - this time with quiet meadows and some alpine running bliss.
Weirdest sunset ever, 2 separate smoke layers but when the sun shone between them the light was yuuuuumy and the smoke was purple
One of the most beautiful hikes we did this summer

Sunset on the summit means descending in the dark. Worth?

The Chockstone || By definition it’s a stone securely jammed in a crack. We thought this to be more of the vortex type. It also took us a little while to find this guy to affirm we were somewhat on route. A cool feature that Dan inched and crammed his way up and through. I opted for the very spicy and exposed 5th class climb to the main ridge to see if the 2nd chute goes. It does. Needless to say, the chockstone is well worth doing. Fortunately for me I got to experience it on the way back down.
Don't let the heat get you down, stay chill 😎
Gotta love watching the clouds change colors
Snack Level: Master || Deciding on what to bring for a mid mountain snack can be daunting. Does it contain easy to digest carbohydrates? How about protein content to help out those amino acids in your blood stream? Better be good about timing to replenish those glycogen stores! But sometimes you come across a snack so tasty the concept of lightweight goes out the window and you kinda blur the lines of those other requirements. Here we have an ak-mak cracker for carbs, Brie cheese for those precious grams of fat and smoked salmon for protein. When you spend enough time on the mountain you learn to just call it “training weight” and carry on. Sure this weighs 2x as much as that bar of yours but it sure as hell tastes 10x better. This of course was an @ostrow12 creation. I’m still stuck on level goldfish.
Cooling off Step 1: find a mud puddle
North Cascades > everywhere else
The Mountaineer || Why do we climb mountains? An excuse for new gear to match our sense of fashion to pursue that insatiable vertical passion? Perhaps to understand the pain our feet can bare After the miles hiked and the rocks climbed to see the damage our bodies can wear? Maybe to see the views and the stars And realize that you have no need for places likes Mars. On this planet lies rock and ice of great height And in the end we get to exclaim “What a beautiful sight.”
Whorl Mountain || Dan (@ostrow12 ) climbs one of the many ridges lining the chutes of Whorl Mountain with clear skies and the Ferguson fire burning in the distance. An awe inspiring peak and considered by the Sierra Club as one of the 35 mountaineers peaks of note, it’s been on the tick list for a while for Dan. For me, it was my first trip to these drainages and I was pretty excited to explore a new area. • With the arrival of Friday, we grabbed our packs, “performance fit” approach shoes, Indian food for dinner and set off with a strong desire to get out and climb away from the California wildfire smoke. • We passed through Horse Creek Pass and had our first glimpse of Whorl Mountain. After some time, well a lot of time, of traversing a “bench” we came to the right chute. Here, we put away the beta and decided to climb and follow whatever lines felt right to the top. More to come from the ascent of Whorl Mountain.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever met anyone as passionate about anything as these two are about fishing.
Hell's highway on Shuksan. Tiny people. Swipe for perspective.
Sleeping on the dirt ain’t all that bad when this is the dirt... Also, this time next month I’ll be waking up in the dirt of LOFOTEN! @akennedy222 and I couldn’t be more excited to visit that crazy chain of islands. For those who have been there already - any tips or must-see spots? Thanks in advance!
Happy birthday to the state we call our home! Here’s a few gems from the disposable cameras we sent out with our campers in Rocky Mountain National Park! 🎉
The pre dawn light is some of my favorite. Finally got a @peakdesign camera clip so I took a toooon of "action shots" on the way to and on the way up Shuksan's Fischer Chimneys route this weekend, and they ALL have Baker in the background haha
@lucaspete23 enjoys a spicy breakfast scramble with views for dayzzzzzz
Ready for @tiffany_dang to be back from California already. Miss you baby ❤️
Our sights are pointing due north this weekend. Stoked @erikofthemountain is finally back from this weird place called Europe? to get after it with @lucaspete23 and I. Possible objectives as seen from the summit of Glacier Peak through a zoom lense at sunset.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS RECAP IS UP (link in bio)!!! Here’s a glimpse of some of our favorite shots this week - including the one and only, Archbishop Aquila!
Post Adventure Mood || Pretty much sums up what it feels like to be back and off the road. Nevertheless, a few days of rest is welcomed before I’ll be back in the mountains. Pictured is one of the more enjoyable belay spots - just be sure to mind the tides!
Some great shots from @lucaspete23 of me being a sleep deprived goon on top Eldorado Peak. We traded sleep for 7k feet of gain, and were definitely a little bit loopy at the top 🤣
Can you guess what we did today?
Humboldt Current || @cassieonawhale sending an area classic at the Promontory. A relatively remote crag meant the only sharing we had to do was with the birds and the waves.
Our high school boys recap video is in the works and we can’t wait to share the graces of the past week. It has been so full of joy and brotherhood and tremendous growth in relationship with our Creator.
Have you spent time in prayer today?
For in the dark there is as much light, as there is life in the open rose, as there is God descending from the heights to the shores of the soul. - John Paul II, Shores of Silence
Ra • had || Because one syllable for the word rad isn’t enough. Similarly, one word or picture to describe this trip just isn’t enough. We climbed in three different states and had six days of climbing in seven days. Our journey took us from the Redwood coast of California, the northern reaches of Index, Washington, and the volcanic rocks of Smith Rock SP in Oregon. The post adventure depression will undoubtedly be felt on this one in the coming days. That being said, I’ll be putting together an extended post so keep an eye out for a link soon! Pictured is a super fun route with a super spicy start on the California coast.
Spent eight hours hiking with 13 high school boys & I cannot tell you how many times I heard the word “bruh”
We’ve got our Day 5/6 photoblogs up on the website! These are parent-exclusive, so look out for an email with the password to access them!
It’s day seven with our high school boys & we can’t believe it’s already almost the end of the week!
Glacier Peak is located smack dab in the middle of the Cascades, we spent hours on the summit just naming peak after peak after peak, waiting for the sun to set. Eventually it did, and it was pure magic 🔥
Snuck a quick one in before work with @lucaspete23. Took some phone pics as we pushed thru the sunrise. They turned out better than expected 🤷 Also congrats to @tiffany_dang for passing her NCLEX and becoming a real (registered) nurse. Excited she'll have time to come exploring this week 😁
(1/3). Working with light as it crests over a mountain... or really anything... is one of my favorite things to work with as a photographer
We’ve been climbing on rocks and leaping off of them the last few days!
When you get up at 2:30 to hike a mountain and take photos like this... is it morning? is it night? nobody knows
The Start of a Climbing Trip || For the longest time I’ve been looking forward to hitting the road and climbing. The kinda of trip that’s eat sleep dream climbing. The adventure is well underway and we are now traveling through Oregon after spending two days exploring the Redwood coast of Northern California. Needless to say, we found what we were looking for - incredible climbing surrounded by redwoods and crashing waves. Stay tuned and stay stoked.

A still from a time lapse that will be included in our high school recap video for @campwojtyla
Sometimes a clean and simple black and white satisfies more than a @snickers ... maybe?
We’ve been climbing, hiking mountains, sleeping in teepees, roasting marshmallows, and now the girls are off rafting. We can’t believe we only have a couple more days to spend together!
“God passes through the thicket of the world, and wherever His glance falls He turns all things to beauty.” -St. John of the Cross
There’s nothing quite like roasting marshmallows around a campfire with some new and old friends.

Mountain + Light || My favorite combination.
I spy with my little eye...a climber!
“I understood that every flower created by Him is beautiful, that the brilliance of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not lessen the perfume of the violet or the sweet simplicity of the daisy. I understood that if all the lowly flowers wished to be roses, nature would no longer be enamelled with lovely hues. And so it is in the world of souls, Our lord's living garden.” // St. Thérèse of Lisieux
to marvel at your beauty, and glory in your ways
We are ready to “rock” with high school girls this week! // P.S. our first parent-exclusive photoblog post is up! Contact email@example.com with any questions regarding access.

@alpineworks is next level!!... check @blackdiamond for the story... [nice work @chrisandthemuse & @wasatchandy] ・・・ On June 29th, BD Athlete @alpineworks reached the Mt. Shavano trailhead and looked at his watch. Forty-nine hours and 38 minutes had passed since he’d set off from the Mt. Massive trailhead in Leadville, Colorado. Now, looming behind him were 14 of the Sawatch range’s 14,000-foot mountains, stretching for roughly 100 miles. He’d climbed over 44,000 vertical feet to cross those peaks, and in doing so had set the unsupported FKT (fastest known time) for completing the notoriously difficult Nolan’s 14.⠀ ⠀ Joe’s trip had its moments. For example, there are approximately two hours during the first night that he still can’t seem to remember. When he finally came to, he was lying on a steep slope at 13,000 feet, slowly sliding down. His shoes, which he didn’t remember taking off, were sitting about 15 feet above him.⠀ ⠀ But those moments were precisely what Joe was looking for.⠀ ⠀ Read our interview with Joe to learn about more of the moments he went through, link in profile.⠀ ⠀ #liverunrepeat #justcoffee #defythedark ⠀ Photo: @wasatchandy
We were surrounded by incredible mountains all day but sometimes the light is cut in such a way that makes the simplest things stand-out beautifully.
BD Athlete @alpineworks was looking for an experience. He wanted it to be hard, and he wanted to push himself to “that edge” where he’d have to make difficult decisions. That’s why he chose Nolan’s 14—a rowdy jaunt through Colorado’s Sawatch range, which links 14 14,000-foot mountains over 100 miles. Needless to say, Joe found what he was looking for, and in the process, set the unsupported record for the route. This is his story. Link in profile.⠀ ⠀ #liverunrepeat #justcoffee #defythedark ⠀ Photo: @chrisandthemuse

Congrats to Joe Grant. Big! Be sure to check out the story and interview over at @blackdiamond . BD Athlete @alpineworks just set the record for Nolan’s 14, unsupported, in a time of 49 hours 38 minutes, which is four hours faster than the previous record! That’s 14 summits over 14,000 feet, at roughly 100 miles on foot, with 44,000+ feet of climb. Whoa. Good job Joe!!! #justcoffee #defythedark #liverunrepeat Photo: @wasatchandy @blackdiamond
Alpine Starts || It’s early. Only a few hours of sleep early. The excitement of climbing higher fuels the continual and seemingly never ending push upwards through the cold night sky. But there’s something else going on here. Beyond just climbing. As crampons scrape and dig in, ice axes plunge into the snow between labored high altitude breaths. It’s a symphony of sorts as the full Moon shines light on one of the greatest stages - the mountain. Question being: are you ready to perform? #joyineering
Where is your favorite place to pray and sit with Jesus?
360° of Rad || The number of times I’ve regretted waking up early to catch sunrise is a whopping zero times. Happy Mountain Monday folks.
