The 7 Ugly Truths of Van Life: Toilet. Prepare yourselves for poo talk! Firstly, we use a Thetford Porta Potti, yes that means we aren't connected to a mains. We have to empty the toilet ourselves and trust me, the sight is the opposite to our poo views. Their is a smell trap which works pretty well, unfortunately when emptying it it doesn't smell of roses! Toilet paper doesn't break down quick enough so that goes in the bin, otherwise it gets stuck inside. Thanks to the happy po easy bidet so we don't end up putting pooey tissues in the bin! Plus when it's full it's sooo heavy! Billy does heavy poos you see. This does mean when it's full Billy has to empty it as I literally can't carry it. The only time I'm grateful for being feeble! We empty it at service stations, down a normal toilet when on the road by hiding it in a large bag and carrying it through. Bless the person in the toilet next to us, they must think we have a really bad tummy. The worst part about emptying it on the road is that sometimes the poo gets stuck and we don't have anything to wash it out with! We promise we do give it a thorough clean when visiting home or at campsites. But to us, being offgrid and keeping our expenses down is priority over having a super clean toilet all of the time!
