the Willet! Which is a variety of Sandpiper. I made this little 4”x4” watercolor this morning over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table while the fog burned off. It turned out alright although the bill is slightly out of proportion. I have such respect for professional bird painters! Watched these guys run back and forth in the surf at Dillon Beach yesterday as they were playing a wild version of wind sprints. The other day, Aden exclaimed that there was a woodpecker in our backyard tree. I looked and didn’t immediately see it and thought he had mistaken what he had seen, as Paul had refilled the bird feeder recently and our yard was aflutter with juncos, mourning doves, house finches, spotted towhees... But he was absolutely right that it was a woodpecker. I initially took photos through a window, but decided to attempt to get some outside. I crept around, nowhere near silent as I took photos (Nikons are known for their loud shutters...), and this bird gave zero cares. All the other birds flew away but this one kept pecking away, even when I was mere feet from it. I’m not sure what it is about birds that I enjoy so much. I love being able to identify and name them. I love encountering species I have never seen before. And I love seeing each bird’s different personality and mannerisms, like the boldness and unafraid nature of this downy woodpecker.

I tried to capture grief intermingled with peacefulness with the imagery and choice of colours, curating the details through symbolism all the way down to the choice of colour for the roses. Birds are Messengers, travellers between worlds. Feathers are tokens left by spirit guides, messengers, and loved ones. White pines represent peace to the Five Nations of the Iroquois. As the autumn transitions to the winter in the ascending darkness we find light within ourselves. The red breasted nuthatch is a beautiful song bird that doesn't migrate during the winter, with calls akin to the sound of trumpets.
