Mistletoebird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum) - female. Found wherever mistletoe grows and feeds on its berries plus some other nectars and fruits and invertebrates. Is an agent for spreading mistletoe by excreting sticky seeds on to host trees. Nomadic and common within its range chasing the fruiting of mistletoe. Not so easy to see because it is small and often high up. How do we learn to draw? Some artists go to school, some are self-taught. Some pick up the skill later in life, some can't really remember a time when they weren't doing it. There's no right or wrong way to go about it: books, videos, classes; if it helps, use it! One thing that you can always use is good old trial an error. You don't need the internet or the library for that one! That was my go-to method of figuring out how to draw, really. Nothing stands out in my mind as 'error' as much as this piece here. The first picture of the twenty-eight parrot was my first go at using the Arches 300gsm smooth watercolour paper ever. I didn't realise that you can't draw on both sides of all papers, and opted for the slightly smoother side as I was used to working on vellum at the time. Turns out that was the back of the paper which just flaked away in fluffy shreds the more I tried to layer on it. I also had exactly zero experience in rendering feathers at this point. I did end up finishing the piece but I don't have a photo of that. It's still hiding away in shame in a manilla folder somewhere. The point is, a month later I came back and did the second twenty-eight - and look how much better that turned out! I now know which is the right side of the paper to draw on, and in that second piece I had another go at rendering ruffled feathers with better results. Just over a year later I revisited the twenty-eights again with Jim's commission and that came out even better! You're going to have some pieces which you think are just dreadful. You're probably going to know they're going to turn out that way from very early on. Finish them anyway! If you know they're going to be a bit mediocre, go all out and try things you might not want to try on something more high-stakes like a commission. It might be a catastrophe, but you might learn something new.

Magpies, feared by many at Spring 😂. I haven’t been attacked by one for almost three years now by following two simple rules, look them in the eye whilst passing, and feed them regularly! Being a redhead, l was a walking target, l used to have a bald patch on the top of my head from being attacked so many times. But l still love them, apart from at Spring, they are extremely placid and friendly birds. And out of any bird l have ever heard, magpies are my favourite. Dusky, our visiting wild Brush Turkey, was back again, but so late I had to use the flash a few times. Didn't seem to bother him however. Sure loves those large midnight grapes, but a nasty Kookaburra swooped on him so aggressively that he took refuge at the end of the terrace under an overgrown bougainvillea. I tossed a few grapes and clumps of minced beef in there and he seemed happy enough. I wonder how often he will come though if the other birds keep up these attacks.
