Hadrian's Wall was built by the Romans to divide "civilization" from "wilderness" and represented the extent of the Empire's frontier. To help defend this wall, they built a number of forts along its length, including one known as “Uxelodunum.” This Roman fort eventually was abandoned and over time the English town of Stanwix grew over top of the remains. Roughly 1500 years after the Romans first built their fort, English General John Stanwix oversaw the construction of a fort to divide "civilization" from "wilderness" and represent the extent of the Empire's frontier. This fort was named in his honor as Fort Stanwix.
