Day 4 - Keswick to Bassentwaite 👣 - 14.4 miles • Today was a weird but adventurous day. Following the Cumbria Way, I was meant to reach Caldbeck (18 miles). But waking up to two impressively horrendous blisters on either foot would end up complicating things. • 3 hours in and I’d managed to limp my way through only 3 miles. There was no way I could make it to Caldbeck now. Everything with my body was fine, but I’d underestimated how debilitating to my pace and walking form a blister could be. That was a costly mistake. • I took refuge in Skiddaw House, the highest hostel in the UK (470m) with the intention of crashing there. The house was totally empty. I showered, made lunch, hung my clothes out to dry in the garden and read in the front room. • By 4pm I was getting restless. So I tried different configurations of ‘taping the shit out of’ my feet and somehow managed to get myself walking properly and with less pain. • Back on the trail I set my sights on finishing in a tiny village called Bassentwaite, getting a pint + pie, then setting up camp in a nearby caravan park. I have no idea if that was allowed. The wardens had gone, so I pitched my tent with the confidence of a man who absolutely definitely is allowed to pitch his tent in this caravan park. Day 3 - Old Dungeon Ghyll to Keswick 👣 - 14 miles, PLUS MOUNTAIN ⛰ • What a day. Waking up to a beautiful sunshiny morning; I was on the trail nice and early, all going well until I realise, 30 minutes in, that I’ve been literally going the wrong direction. • I’m faced with a difficult choice. Either I come back on myself (sensible but dull), or, exercise some canny nous by crossing a 700 meter mountain pass and reconnect to the trail (reckless bravado).... 🤔 • Was off the mountain by about 12:30 and still had to bosh out 14 miles to get to Keswick 😔, which was a pleasant slog to be fair. I’m hot, I’m tired, my feet are sore from walking, and I loved every step. That sums up a day of hiking along Hadrian’s Wall and those were my sentiments when we arrived at Saughy Rigg Farm, one of the better places where we stayed along the way. Our room was large and the surrounding countryside was spectacular. The food was also good, especially the breakfast. The service seemed a bit stretched at times, though. All in all, a solid recommendation.
