Drop this story. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to help guide hundreds of people to their health and body goals. I’d say over 90% of these people knew enough about exercise and diet to get results by themselves. For many of them, they knew how to get the results they wanted, yet they couldn’t seem to be able to make hardly any progress. The majority of these people had been telling themselves that getting results was super difficult, and that they would practically have to live in the gym while depriving themselves of their favourite foods to get to what they want to look and feel like. Here’s the thing. If you think that you have to train almost every day to get the results you want, that will be your experience, and it will always seem like an uphill battle. If you believe that you have to cut carbs, fats, sugars or any other delicious food from your diet to start seeing progress, then you will constantly feel deprived on your quest to look and feel better, and that ain’t no fun! Now I’m not saying you can sit on your backside all day, eating cookies, ice cream and pizza, while forming your perfect body. There certainly have to be some changes made to see different results. However, you don’t need to exercise excessively or diet aggressively to get the results you want. Sure, some structured, regular, enjoyable exercise will help you get results, as well as making 1 or 2 changes to your daily diet habits. But thinking that getting results is a hard grind, will always have you battling with crazy diets and exercise plans for the rest of your life. Think about dropping your current story surrounding getting results. What do you believe it takes to get you the body you want? Take your foot off this. I read an article last week in a popular health and fitness magazine. This particular article spoke in depth about how vital grit and determination are when it comes to achieving your health and fitness goals. It wasn’t a bad piece, and the author had some valid points, but there were a couple of ‘red flags’ showing up for me. The guy was trying to make out that all you need to do to start losing weight, get strong, and increase your health and energy, was to knuckle down, work hard and have plenty of willpower and determination. Now I know plenty of people who work hard in the gym and display extreme discipline when it comes to prepping food and following a ‘healthy’ diet regimen. Heck, most of the people who come to me for help train upwards of 5 hours per week, way too much than the number of hours I’d care to train for! Yet these people still don’t get close to how they want to look and feel, despite their impressive time and effort in the gym and with their nutrition plan. If I was consistently putting in 5 hours of training per week, I’d better be seeing the results I wanted, especially if my nutrition was on point! Working hard and pushing yourself in the gym is necessary for changing the way you look and feel, no doubt about it. But it’s not all about grinding out crazy sessions and following a super strict diet. With my clients, there are other things that have a much more significant impact on their results than the training and diet they follow. The things that they are doing or are not doing are what I call the brakes. Their foot is on the accelerator, they desire results so much, yet their other foot is on the brakes through the other things they are/are not doing. Some of these include Taking rest days Writing down specific goals and outcomes for the week Spending less time on social media (usually comparing their day 5 to someones day 2056) Breathing better Appreciating the good things in their life (health family, body etc.) What do you need to start doing or stop doing to take your foot off the brake?
Throughout my research I found many studies that suggest exercise is as effective as prescription drugs for relieving depressive symptoms. That’s powerful. However, I’m typically a very skeptical person and I don’t believe everything I read, even if its masqueraded as a ‘study.’ _____________________ But after seeing research upon research about the benefits of exercise, I knew there had to be something there, especially from my own #SkinInTheGame (experience) of using exercise when things get tough. _____________________ My main point is this: if there’s something that could possibly help you deal, you need to try it.

That one thing. In the past few days, my writing and creative work have taken a back seat. And rightly so. I have been spending most of my days either; Looking at my daughter Holding my daughter Thinking about my daughter and wife Changing nappies (only a few!) It really has been a special week, and I feel like I’m learning new stuff every day. Of course, I don’t have a clue what I’m doing, but I’m feeling less ’awkward’ around her each day! This post is about doing that one thing that you know would change everything for you regarding your health and fitness goals. You probably know what this one thing is, even though you think you have to complete a long list of things daily to start seeing noticeable progress. Here are some examples of ‘1st steps’ I had my coaching group doing yesterday; Write down what you want to achieve. Most people don’t get specific enough with their goals Drink more water Do all that you can to improve sleep quality (a hard one for me at the minute!) Walk more Eat some protein at breakfast Show appreciation for the body you have, even if it’s not what you want right now, you can be grateful for many things regarding your body Doing this one thing, and taking the first step will create momentum and daily 'wins' for you so that you can make rapid progress as you get more consistent with choosing the right actions. Little on-set sneak peak. @paulscanlonuk reminded me tonight of the power of “skin in the game.” He reminded me that someone out there is depending on me, on you, on us to get in “the game” and go for what we have convictions about. Not what we have preferences for, but what our heart holds as a true conviction. It is possible that preference can masquerade as conviction...do we really know what our conviction is or are we pretending? More to come about “the skin in the game” behind this video shot today.

With the recent arrival of baby Lia, working out and staying active is more important than ever. Although 45-60 minute gym sessions are now a thing of the past for me, training still has to be done. This benefits me, mentally more than physically right now. And exercising regularly will have a positive impact on my wife and daughter's life. I trained for 12 minutes today. Don't underestimate what you can get done it such a short space of time. With sleep duration and quality plummeting, shorter, regular workouts are actually more beneficial than longer sessions. Today I did 2 mins mobility and 1 min hollow body hold for core activation. Then went on to: A1 Y's to T's x 12 A2 BW Cossack Squat x 12 A3 Push Ups x 12 A4 2 Arm KB Swing 5 rounds straight through. So in 12 minutes, I have chosen moves that work most body parts improve mobility elevate my heart rate I shall train this way for the foreseeable future, ensuring that I get my 10k steps per day :-) Anyone else trained today?
When you’re writing a book and readying for publication, you as the author are not the only one invested. In my case, I have an amazing friend and author coach, Amber Jensen who is the author of This is Dirt (available on Amazon.com.) I have my cover illustrator and designer, Kristen, of Miss Goggles Illustration. My photographer and I will be having our next shoot the week of August 20th, that’s Sarah B. Gilliam. (This photo not one of hers, this is one I have had since the tattoo first healed.) And I’ve got a whole ‘nother designer doing the actual book layout when the manuscript is totally ready! (More on that soon!) And that’s not to mention my three beta readers and impending copywriters. So much love is being poured into this project by so many more than just myself. What do you think you have to do? Just yesterday I was shown a post from a nutrition guru making laughable claims regarding what people need to do to get into better shape and achieve greater health. Lots of ‘must do’s’ appeared in his post and I had to laugh because basically, this was me a couple of years ago. You must do weights You must eat protein every meal You must drink 3 litres of water You must get 8 hours of sleep You must eat fibre with every meal You must train a least 3 x a week The thing is, I used to recommend stuff that worked for me. So, therefore, I tried to make everyone else do the methods that brought me results. It was clear very soon that only a small percentage of people wanted to train how I did, as well as follow the nutrition plan I did. To make rapid progress with your health and fitness goals, it only requires you to do a couple of simple things. I may add that these things need to be done consistently, but they don’t have to be laborious or difficult. I’ll be showing a handful of people how simple it really can be to make more progress in the next four weeks than in the last twelve months. friends who know me well know i'm not a poster-of-selfies. yes, i'll post an occasional sweaty-face pic post-workout, or selfie with my dog doing something silly on my story. but i don't actively take selfies to throw on my actual my feed. maybe i don't want people to think i'm vain, maybe i'm too critical of myself in pictures. whatever the reason, i just don't post selfies. . . but today, after i had snapped a few selfies with my sleeping pup, (he was so peaceful and i couldn't help it), i was scrolling back through the pics, and Y'ALL -- i was SHOCKED at my own skin. i know, i know, i rave about RF constantly, so how could i be shocked at the skin on my own face? i use the products everyday, so i must automatically have perfect skin, right? WRONG. . . a couple months ago, my lady doc put me on a new BC prescription that completely jacked up my system. for the past few months i've been angry at my face. every time i looked in the mirror, it seemed as though a new blemish had popped out of nowhere: under my chin, under my eyes, between my eyebrows on my forehead. as soon as one would start to fade, SURPRISE, there was a new one to take it's place. it was like my skin was laughing at me. it was no bueno. i was miserable. i was stressed. . . but let me tell you, RF saved me. it didn't completely clear up my skin during those months, because RF can't control all outside factors... it can't control my skin's reaction to my prescription, it can't control the resulting stress from my body being a mess, and it can't control that stress manifesting in breakouts. but RF made it MANAGEABLE. soothe took care of my red and irritated skin, and unblemish knocked out the breakouts quicker than if i hadn't been using it. today, i snapped a selfie and was AMAZED at how clear my skin looked. so ima say screw what the haters say about selfies, because ya gotta love the skin you're in, friends. #skininthegame

Parabens = preservatives • Did you know that parabens actually have a very natural origin? They are formed from an acid (p-hydroxy-benzoic acid) found in raspberries and blackberries and are necessary in cosmetics to keep them fresh AND safe. Ironically, many ‘natural’ brands often have to resort to using more synthetic preservatives to avoid using parabens...I believe that may be called a contradiction...? • Any-who, minuscule amounts of parabens are used in cosmetics to preserve them. Without them our mascara, lotions, toners, and foundations would be rampant with fungus and bacteria and mold. 🤢 • The U.S. and global science community have concluded that there is no evidence that parabens are unsafe in cosmetic products and have no causal link between them and cancer risks. #themoreyouknow
