"The Cloverfield Paradox" Luke's Rating: 4 of 10 👎 Rotten Tomatoes: 18% 🍀 Metacritic: 36% The newest Cloverfield installment is by no means a quality film, however it does maintain a well-structured plot with solid acting. A melting pot of international astronauts aboard a particle accelerator in space must figure out how to not only get it up and running, but also find a way back home after they find themselves in another dimension. For being a Cloverfield film, Paradox is far from original, and honestly pretty boring. If I were to compare it to a film, I think that Passengers would be its closest comparison. The only character that was sort of fleshed out was our main character fortunately. There was enough incentive to watch Gugu Mbatha-Raw's character and her internal struggle, but aside from that there isn't much going on in this story. All the other characters are two-dimensional, and honestly there were too many of them. For what appears to be an impressive cast, none of the actors were really given a chance to show their chops. This film also does what Lost did by introducing plot points, and then never addressing them again. Ps. I'm probably going to compare this to #Sunshine a lot. Js. (Spoiler free) #TheCloverfieldParadox is directed by #JuliusOnah stars #GuguMbatharaw #DanielBrühl , #RogerDavies , #ElizabethDebicki , #ChrisO 'Dowd, and #JohnOrtiz , and is about the earth running out of energy, so they make a particle excelorator and fire it in space, and from the perspective of the astronauts, the earth is gone... then weird stuff happens. This movie benefits from having the amount of likeable characters that it does. With these sci fi movies that take place on a space ship with a limited cast, you need this cast to be likeable, like in Sunshine, (sorry) and this movie delivers. Chris O'dowd was probably my favorite in the group, but I feel like he's probably supposed to be. The second part in a sci fi movie of this nature is the space problems that threaten people's lives and this one has... unique ones. I won't spoil it but basically weird stuff happens and it makes sense sort of, but I'm left at the end just unsure of what's real and if my phone is going to eat my fingers. Anyway, this movie does a great job with the characters, but no so much the logic. Like Sunshine (seriously watch Sunshine) it feels the need for a cliche third act that throws the crazy, unique sci fi elements out the window. Unfortunately, up to that point it was nowhere near as good as Sunshine (I know I know, I'll stop) even though it is very similar. My final complaint is the effects. Some of them looked great, and some of them took me out of the movie completely. This could have used a bigger budget, but with #Life not doing well I can see why they made this cheap. In the end, it was a mostly unique, well characterized, and well acted sci j thriller with occasional poor effects, gaps in logic, and a poor third act. I give this a "not as good as Sunshine" out of ten... but really it's a "good enough to spend two hours on" out of ten. And yes, I'm just making phrases up randomly now. Deal with it. So that's it.
