I don’t always study in the Nation Library, but when I do, I sit near the OED, because it remains one of humanity’s finest achievements. All 20 volumes.
Old people's Split Milk listening session happening at the National Library of Australia. Great book, food and a groggy post-op pup with fantastic company and a cosy reading nook - I know where I'd rather be!
A new find. NK231 ‘A parrot of New South Wales by WR’. The catalogue record for the undigitised watercolor makes reference to it being a ‘copy’ of the John White image from his ‘Journal of a voyage to NSW’. What the original cataloguer seems to have overlooked is that it would appear to be an original and hitherto unrecognized Sarah Stone watercolor of the Rainbow lorikeet or Blue bellied parrot, albeit from a later date, post-1816, after the White journal images. The work is painted on paper watermarked ‘J Larkin 1816’. An inscription under the WR initials has been largely erased. A check with Preservation may reveal more clues. It’s Rose Show Day at @nationallibraryaus as the staff pluck and display their best. I’ve entered Thomas’ apricots.
