Greyfriars Kirkyard... While traveling in this city I met some incredible people - Gio, Sam, Tom, Rob and Adam. Tom was a super friendly man who invited me to join him and his friend in a Scottish pub where he got me a classic gin and tonic, and his friend made me try Scottish whiskey and haggis. Tom came from Oxford and had fled from the African police in Kenya where he, illegally, had set up a youth hostel without a license (now living in Edinburgh with his girlfriend), Rob was born in China, raised in Singapore, recently living in Australia but now in Scotland with his girlfriend that he met in Peru. Adam I didn’t really talk to but he was Irish and spoke French the whole night except from when he greeted me in the most Irish accent I’ve ever heard. Summary: I had the loveliest night (even though my English is a mix of literally everything right now...)
This picture was taken at Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh - a graveyard where a moderately famous author, Joanne Rowling, began writing a moderately famous piece of fiction, “Happy Potter.” Names such as Tom Riddle and McGonagall were inspired by the names on these gravestones! Thank you Rob for teaching me so much about this place’s history.❤️
Sunset at Greyfrars cemetery in Edinburgh .. of course since it’s winter in Scotland it’s on 3pm! The building is the George Heriot School, which was one of JK Rowling’s inspirations for Hogwarts . . . . . #travelingram #worldisyouroyster #keepexploring #travelblogger #travellingthroughtheworld #instatravel #worlderlust #travellover #picturesque #agameoftomes #passionpassport #travelawesome #travelbug #travelphotography #travelporn #beautifulmatters #scotland #sunsets #sunset 🌅 #sunset_pics #silhouette #goldensky #sunset_lovers #edinburgh
• Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh • Greyfriars Kirkyard is the most traditionally gothic churchyard in relation to its appearance. 💀 Honestly, just standing here it feels like you’re the protagonist of a Bronte novel. Or you half expect to see Jennet Humphrey lingering ominously graveside, blending in with all the black and grey sandstone. ~ ~ ~ This churchyard is the resting place of many notable Edinburgh citizens, and was also the location of the Covenanters Prison. ⛓Endearingly, a dog called Bobby is one of those most famously interred here. 🐕 He used to hang around in the graveyard until a police officer, John Gray, befriended him. Gray trained Bobby the dog to leave the graveyard at the sound of the 1pm gun fired from Edinburgh castle (a ceremonious firing that is still observed today). Gray taught Bobby to walk over to a nearby cafe, where Gray would be having a drink. ☕️ When Bobby arrived Gray would order him a hearty hot pie meal. 🥧 ~ ~ This dog is famous for his loyalty, and when his best friend died he stayed at his grave for just over a decade, until his own death. ☠️Greyfriars Bobby is now buried next to his best friend, John Gray. A statue commemorates Bobby near the entrance to the graveyard. 🐶
Been having a blast traveling. Found a awesome graveyard Edinburgh!
