Book: Love is a Truck by Aamy Novesky #AmyNovesky
#SaraGillingham #CameronKids () Description: An ode to trucks for the very young.
This book is both lovely-looking and practically designed, with a buckram cover, slightly textured board pages and a fairly small square format. The palette is limited to black, white, grey, brown and shades of red. This works brilliantly to suggest the excitement and passion a child can feel for trucks. The gender of the book’s truck-loving curly-haired child isn’t obvious, reminding us that anyone can love fire engines. The text follows a “Love is…” format. Something that niggled at me was that I felt some of the declarations worked as metaphors – “Love is an ice cream truck, the sweetest truck of all,” for example, suggests the joy that love can bring – while others didn’t signify anything beyond fondness for the truck itself: “Love is… a rolling cement mixer.” To me, this made the text feel uneven and a little unsatisfying, although maybe I’m trying to read too much into a simple celebration of trucks for toddlers.
